Default Aftermarket Exhaust?

Guys,

Sorry for the newbie questions, but I just got a used 997 S. (Sold a 360 Spider to get it). So far I think the car is great, but I miss the sound. Had a 996 with Sport Exhaust which was cool.

What’s the recommended aftermarket exhaust on these things to get a little more volume at mid to high revs?

Thanks for answering a basic question.

Tim

Thanks. If you're willing:
- Can you point me toward a site (Google came up empty)
- What is the change - sound, power, cost, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

Quite a variety of mufflers are available. Claims by the manufacturers and user comments are all over the map. A partial listing is as follows;
-PSE: Considered to have a good sound, no extra power, heavy & expensive.
-AWE: Good sound, not too loud, makes power, excellent quality(I just got one & love it).
-Fabspeed: Some like the sound & some don't, good quality & makes power.
-Tubi: Good sound & power, high quality, expensive.
-Cargraphic: Good sound, quality & power. Available in different sound levels.
-Fvd: Good power & quality. Available in different sound levels.
-BB: Never seen any reports for it. Reputed to be lesser quality.
-Supersprint: Good quality & sound, makes power & expensive.

Be aware of the following:
-"Export" means loud.
-"Tuv" compliant is not too loud.
-Muffler bypass is angry neighbor loud.
-Don't expect more than 5 to 10 horsepower.
-The louder mufflers don't make any more power than one you can live with.
-For more meaningful power & torque gains, replace the headers & catalytics.
-Don't get 100 cell cats, may eventually cause check engine lights.

And finally: All of us making these wonderful suggestions(even me), don't have to pay for them or suffer the unintended consequences.

That is probably the best post I have ever read on this forum. Thank you very much!

I disagree that PSE is crap. It's a Porsche part, and won't void your warranty. If you have Sport Chrono or install the switch, it removes the "angry neighbor loud" issue.

I think it sounds great. If you want more noise, pull the power connector off the solenoid, or plug the vacuum hose.

If you need more power, buy a car with the factory X51 powerkit. 5-10 hp gain isn't going to be worth the hassle if the dealer tech determines that your "engine problem" is related to your aftermarket exhaust system.

Just MHO and I'm new to the Porsche family, so I'm still basking in the stock C4S "glow".

Michael, great summary. Thanks for the post.

BTW, Tim - nothing sounds like a F-car, but I think you'll love the 997 anyway... <g>

It's the ultimate daily driver. Good luck!

Nice compilation there Michael!
tstafford, I put together the video promos from Fabspeed, Speedart and AWE into a single clip: Exhaust comparo
Also, people do seem to love their PSE. I would not worry about going with aftermarket systems - these do NOT void your warranty.

Great post. Thanks for the comparo. I have the FabSpeed MAx Flows and they sound very good, IMHO. They seem to be getting a little louder as miles accumulate. I love em!
