Default 997 / 997S discount

I'm trying to get an idea of what I might be able to get off a new 997 order (MY 07). If you've bought a new (not used) 997, could you answer a couple of questions?
  1. How much of a discount did you get ($)?
  2. How much of a discount did you get (%)?
  3. What model year did you get?
  4. When did you get it (date)?
  5. Did you order or buy off the lot?

Thanks everyone! I haven't started talking price yet, but I'd like to be armed with more than just Edmunds invoice price before I start shopping around.

There have been some postings in the past where people have indicated discounts in the 5% to 7% range I think. Do a search on discounts and/or price and you should be able to find them. Also, a better source for dealer cost I think is Consumer Reports http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/home.htm I've not used them for Porsche pricing, since I bought my 997 used (barely), but I have used them for other car purchases. For a small fee (like $10- $15), they provide you with true dealer cost for vehicles including the holdbacks. Invoice is not what the car actually costs the dealer. Having the true cost is a great advantage for negotiating, at least with "normal" cars. Don't know how well it will help with Porsche, but for what you're going to pay, the fee for this it trivial.

Good luck, & have a fun!

I've found the CR new car buyer's "kit" to be well worth the money; at least for shopping for a new Honda Pilot. But most Porsche sales consultants would probably laugh if approached with a CR "fair offer" based on the dealer's true cost.

The funny thing about this forum is that information previously posted does not simply disappear. As a matter of fact, it can be retrieved by using the search function. Here's the most current stuff (last five months):

Alright, Wolfgang!

Thanks for teaching newbies that the information is here already and that they just need to get it themselves instead of relying on being spoon fed (of course they don't realize that's how we perceive it! )

Still better to be informed than not. I bought a Pilot for my wife as well. Great vehicle, and got a good price by having the benefit of CR's info. Did have to walk out of the dealership once to get the VIN etching charge dropped though!

There is no holdback on a Porsche...the invoice price on Edmunds is accurate. There is not way to know truly what the dealer has in the car though, as there are sometimes additional volume discounts and then of course the carrying costs of their floor plan.

Margins are higher on options, so dealers will deal more on a loaded car. From memory most people reported discounts in the 5-7% range depending on location, although some dealers aren't as accommodating on ordered cars.

It's the market!
You cannot expect to get the same kind of result when you use tactics designed to purchase a mass produced, multi-marketed car vs a limited production, currently very high demand, high-end sports car.

It makes no difference how much the dealer is making, only his desire to move the car! You know the costs, so find a price you are comfortable with, then fax your offer to a group of Pcar dealers and you may get lucky.

Okay, you got me - I didn't search first time time. I'll read all those links now (thanks for linking them, btw). mglobe - thanks for the tip on the CR site!

Oh...and just because I forgot to search and don't have thousands of posts to my name doesn't mean I'm a newbie. My first internet forum was about 13 years ago, but everyone makes mistakes.

No problem at all. It's the teacher in me who attempts to decrease the number of repetitive questions... If I had thought it was out of laziness or whatever, I would not have provided the links. Really just trying to help, even though it does not necessarily come across that way. Good luck purchasing your Porsche!

Thanks - I'm almost through all the threads and I took a lot of notes (like a good student ). I'll put a selection of the notes below for anyone else perusing the thread.

Some sample discounts ($):
$3k (Washington St.)
$3.5k (Georgia)
$3.5k (Florida)
$4k (Maryland)
$4k (Ohio)
$4k (Louisiana)
$4k - $5k (New York)
$5k (Texas)
$5.5k (Oregon)
$6k (Tennessee)
$6k (Missouri)
$6k (New Jersey)
$2.8k - $7.5k (California)
$7k (DC - launch car)

Some sample discounts (%):
4% (Michigan)
4% - 5% (New York)
5% (Arizona)
6% (Ohio)
6% (Tennessee)
3% - 6.5% (Illinois)
6.5% (Mississippi)
7.4% (Florida)

I'll keep updating this list as I find other good discounts. If anyone wants to attach their name to theirs (for reference), let me know.

1. $10,300 off MSRP sticker
2. Just about 11%
3. 2006 997 S
4. 04/24/06 (starting working on deal April 5th, though).
5. Off the lot (car was at port with the options that were importan to me and I could not wait months).

Keep in mind that I had purchased my 05 from the the same dealer and my trade had $10K in neg equity (even with the full trade-in ACV being given - which was Great) and the deal was only going to happen if they knocked that amount off the car. Essentially, I paid just a little under MSRP.

Some dealers really will hold out for a full pop and others will want to move a unit to help their volume (at a loss of profit)... Find yourself the latter. Good luck!
