True Porsche aficionados acknowledge each other. These days there are many drivers who bough the car like any other car and have no sense of community. I tend to give a thumbs up when I have eye contact and think it is a fellow Porschephile.
exactly. I mean no doubt that some people might just overall miss it, but the people who give a response are most likely true porschephiles. Heck, i had people in jeeps and buick centurys giving me a thumbs up yesterday...or was it the middle finger? Either way i saw something waving at me as i passed them.
I remember one time I was crossing a street here in the city back when the Ferrari 360 just hit the roads, and this dude pulled up to the light in one, and I remember a guy in a 3 series BMW pulled up beside him and gave him a big thumbs up. Well, the dude in the Ferrari just slowly turned his head and glanced over at Mr. 3 series and gave him this cool smile and flashed a peace sign as to say "yeah, this car is cool". Back then I thought that was the coolest thing ever. So, all told, I give other P-car drivers the "yeah our cars are cool" peace sign when I drive by. The only problem in this city is that most of the time the only P-cars I see are soccer moms driving Cayennes. Eh, go figure.
The wave still happens, but maybe less often and when we least expect it:
I was driving my 997 through bumper-to-bumper traffic in Orlando a few months ago, and a woman in a Cayenne flashed her lights and waved at me. I smiled and waved back, surprised at the attention. So don't discount all the soccer moms in Cayennes
Must be dead. In the 9+ months reading Rennlist, this is the first time I've even seen it mentioned. Haven't seen anyone wave or flash their lights while out driving either.
Once I got a thumbs up when about 15 993 enthusiasts came through town. Otherwise I have never been flashed (that I know of) in 6 years of Porsche ownership.
I flash my lights to fellow drivers, I get about a 50% return wave or flash. I have rarely gotten a return from fellows in their new 997's. I must say that I do not flash cayennes, I don't know, flashing a 4x4??? Oh, and I get far less returns in my Boxster. Hmmm Porsche snobs in CT???

people in older p-cars always wave...its the modern era of p-cars...they just dont know...most of them dont even know what rennlist is..they just dont know
It has always been a Porsche tradition to blink your lights @ another fellow (member of learned society) P-car driver. However, many Porsche owners do not know this tradition, so I guess it’s our responsibility to ensure they know...
How many women do you know that are thrilled to arrive at a party to find another woman wearing the exact same outfit? I think a similar line of reasoning goes through a lot of the P-car owners these days. If you're buying a car as a status symbol, it's painful to see others also owning what is supposed to be an exclusive, luxury vehicle! I've flashed lights at other 997 owners in my area (northern Jersey) and have twice gotten frowns and stares. Seeing as how those were my first two times, I decided not to do that anymore!
Like joey c says, it is the modern era of p-cars. Porsches have gone from being a specialist, niche car to a mass-produced luxury status symbol. Even my P-car dealership seems to represent this change -- my salesguy left because a new GM came in and started to enact sales strategies akin to those found at Toyota (i.e., salesman has to go to the manager to get price approval, while you sit out there, etc., etc.) The days of knowing that your fellow P-car driver was also a driving enthusiast are over.
