Those of you that own a BMW and a 996/997 Porsche, are the Porsche brakes as dirty as the BMW's? My last Porsche had PCCB's and they were very clean. Two to three days and my BMW's wheels are filthy

Get rid of the OEM and get Axxis Delux Plus pad (blue box). The difference is amazing, almost no dust at all.

Here's a good source, no affiliation..... http://www.zeckhausen.com/BMW/E46.htm

My M3 wheels get dust on them so quick, if I was to go a week of driving it without cleaning, the rims would be black. I wish I had known about the Axxis Plus pads earlier. I don't need them now, as she is up for sale.

I find MB stock pads are very dusty as well. Changed them to aftermarket ones and they are much better.

try waxing the wheels with rejex you will get less brake dust accumilation and will be a breeze to clean. you can just wipe the dust off.

BMW uses soft pads on their high performance cars. The advantage is that they provide better stopping power, and the disadvantage is that you will always have brake dust on your wheels. An inexpensive way to minimize this problem is to coat your wheels with a good wax. If nothing else, it'll be much easier to clean your wheels.

djantlive - I concur. The front wheels on my wife's MB CLK 320 are always coated with black brake dust. What after-market pads did you install?

Blow off dust with compressed air (especially on drilled rotors) to get a break from slow dust accumulation followed by a period of massive dust discharge.

You can buy aftermarket pads which have less dust.

I had an unbelievable amount of black dust on the 20" wheels of my BMW X5 4.6is. BMW's stock brake pads must be made of Kingsford charcoal. A change to Rotex Gold Kevlar pads (available from brakeworld.com) fixed the problem. The BMW dealer pretended there was no problem -why would you care if you have dirty black soot-covered front wheels after driving only a day or two?

I've seen these metal or plastic disks somewhere that you install between the wheel and hub which create air currents that deflect dust from accumulating on wheels. Would be fine for BMW with dark calipers and bizzy wheels, but they would stop the fancy calipers from being seen on our Porsches. FWIW

Wheel "protectors" such as you describe create heating problems in that they block air circulation to rotors Unsuitable
