You better thank your lucky stars, Jeff. My guess is that a call probably came through on his radio requesting all nearby units to an emergency like an armed robbery in progress. And you probably thought it was your innocent look that got you off.

I don't know how they are in Alabama, but the cops out here will show you no mercy for "reckless" driving - going twice the speed limit - no valid driver's license? The only way to get out of a ticket is for the cop to get called to a more serious crime in progress.

That's how I got out of a ticket for speeding on a surface street once. The cop even said to me in a sarcastic tone "today is your lucky day" and sped off with lights and sirens to some other call.

Yep, thank your lucky stars.

That reminds me of my friend Jerry - he lived in Santa Cruz and overslept on a time trial day for Laguna Seca. He was doing 140+ in his yellow '74 Euro Carrera when they pulled him over. Numbers on the car, driving suit, everything. All of the highway patrol units suddenly had to leave suddenly for another call. Jerry was in luck that day!

Reminds me of the time I passed a Highway Patrol car in the next lane doing 85+ (I was half asleep), not in a pcar but the POS commuter car I had at the time. The look on my face as I looked at him while passing must have been priceless! Fortunately, some guy on the opposite side of the freeway was doing something weird - the CHP looked back and forth at me and him, and then took after the other guy.

Guys, you could be on to something here - does anyone have a patent on a auto-dialer that calls in on demand with details of a robbery in progress just a few blocks from your GPS location?

You got damn lucky....

One got me for 77 in a 55 ... when I got in the patrol car I asked him if there was any chance he would give me a warning.. (he laughed and said no)... so then I said.. "hey how about lowering it a few so I don't get hit so hard with my insurance".. again he laughed and said.. you know.. I really got you at 83 but I couldn't get you locked for some damn reason... so I manually locked you at 77 , consider yourself lucky. Maybe they will lower it if you go to court.

I smirked to myself and asked "so... that happen alot, not getting em locked?" and he said... nope.. not very often... but it has happened before.... as he handed me my ticket.

I guess I should thank the K-40 diffuser.... for giving me the few extra seconds to slow down.... cause that cop wasn't giving me any slack.

got a good lawyer and a good DA (both P-car owners <grin>) and they managed to work me into an improper equipment citation...

enjoying new 911S on twisty bit back roads in excess of posted speed limit --- 325.00
look on officers face when asked about jammed radar ---- priceless

Sounds great in theory, and might even fly in a movie scene, but the caller would have to sound exactly like the dispatcher he's been listening to all day. Not to mention a few technical details such as knowing the exact police codes and syntax used.

There'd be a better chance of pulling this off if police communication was done strictly through text messaging without a familiar voice at the other end, or if the dispatcher was replaced with a computerized generic voice. Until that day, hackers can only dream.

I was only of course only joking! But why does it have to be so complicated, wouldn't a 911 call from a concerned member of the public lead to the desired outcome?

Of course it would be easier just to have a valid drivers liscense and registration with you in the car!!!!

That's pretty ridiculous. If that was NY you could have been arrested, and just might have.

You forgot to mention the most important point: not to get caught speeding in the first place!
