MP 3 cd's playable in '06 stereos ?
I read in passing that '06 997's can play mp3 encoded cd's...which is a very decent alternative until the iPod solution.
Has this capability been verified on either standard stereo and/or Bose? If so, can it play back any quality of encoding (like 256 vbr)?
Also, can the random playback mode be utilized with mp3 discs?
Then I can easily burn a "greatest hits" cd with 100 or so songs from my iTunes program........

I think they started playing MP3s starting after 05 April builds. Do a search on mp3 and there is a long thread about it. I dont think you need the Bose either.

MP3 info from last April:

So is it accurate to say cars with PCM2 have MP3 capability, by definition?

My 06 (single CD player w/Bose) plays mp3s just fine.
Sorry, I can answer your 256 encoding question, don't think I went that high with mine.
As for Random, yes and no but it's mainly a joke because the Random setting always reverts to Sequential-play every time the car is shut off so you have to keep changing it back to Random every time you start the car. Major pain. Plus, the "seed" isn't randomized so your mp3 CD will play songs in the EXACT SAME "random" order from the EXACT SAME starting place every time you start the car (and set it to Random of course because it will have reverted to Sequential). If the Nipponese can get Random-play right in a $12,000 vehicle wouldn't you think the Germans could in a $100,000 vehicle! I just let my mp3 CD play; I don't even bother with Random-play it's so stupid.

CD bit rate is 1400 kbps. So to say that 320 kbps is "CD" is incorrect - 320 is still highly compressed. Why do you think a 320 kbps MP3 is still 25% the size of the original CD WAV file? In a Porsche driven at speed - especially with PSE - trying to achieve an audiophile experience is futile. P-cars are all about engine and road noise. :-D
