Default Best speed to rip music for 997

New to ripping and burning. Have windows media player and am ripping cds in wma files to load many songs on a single cd. Anyone know the best speed to rip at? Says best quality is 192 but fits less that way and converted when burning. Don't know anything about this but is a speed in the middle of 128kbps good enough sound quality?

TIA.

It really depends on your ear. 96k bit rate might even be good enough.

128k is a safe bet.

Come on Rob, don't fail us now.

From what I understand, 192 IS the best quality (it's all I run) 128 is compressed and should not be all that noticable until you start blasting it and it get's distorted. This happens with all music but when it's compressed, it's worse.

Have you ever heard an iPod? Those things are LOUD!!! but the quality of the music is crap when it is uber compressed.

Rob has his own studio so he knows!

PS, this may get moved to OT but I like how you incorperate 997 into the message. Very clever! (That was not an insult, I kid you not.)

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. Which I prolly am on most of this.

The Kid,

Thank you. Did one in the middle last night and sounded ok. Tried one today at highest quality and it ended up converting back before burn. Sorry if this is off topic but it is a 997 I am using it in. Also noticed windows media did not burn in the order I had them made it a random burn on the CD, anyway to change this. I did not have the player in the car on random and the numbers were correct just not the order I thought they would appear.

Thanks.

Yeah, I noticed how he couched his question within the framework of a 997 issue. Guess he learned how to keep it here in this close knit group without it getting ripped out and placed into the vast ocean that is the OT Forum.

192 seems to be the best compromise if space is an issue. If you have lots of storage, as in you are alright with having less songs on a disk, 256 would be sweet. Remember, 320 is the original lossless representation. Makes you realize how much is taken out with 128 and lower!

192 is good, 128kbps is the best bet -

Try ripping two CDs. One at 320 and the other at the 192. I bet you can't tell the difference, because I can't in my car. If I had the Levinson sound system and a Lexus 430, then maybe.

Then, give your MP3 player to charity and get an iPod. You will never regret it!

Random playback in the 997 is a joke as the random feature reverts back to sequential each time you turn the car off. You can choose random every time you start the car BUT your mp3 CD-R will always start at the same song and then will play your mp3 songs in THE SAME EXACT ORDER because it doesn't get a new randon "seed" each time.
So much for "random" play in the P-car.

192 is fine. anything more and you probably won't tell the difference between them.

also note that this isn't the speed. :-) it's the bit-rate

Seems like all the answers are OT. His question was what is the fastest speed you can drive the 997 while still ripping a CD. In my experience having your attention distracted by a laptop is unsafe over 125 mph.

If you're interested in quality alone, not quantity / quality combined, then AIFF 44.100 mHz, 16 bit, stereo.

AIFF is to MP3 what Porsche is to... oh, say... Chevy... for example.

Pretty clever there, Boo. That's one way of interpreting it.

Johnny, nice jab.
