Doc, I actually did look around. But I definitely wanted slate and I definitely wanted it to be wart-free and I definitely wanted TPMS, and there was nothing available that met all three criteria. So when my dealer gave me a good discount, I went with ordering... which now I kind of like because I know it's going to be MY car, and my car only; but the wait is still a killer.

What kind of discount were you offered for ordering a car? I am in the process and the dealer has $6,000 on the table.

I just got a little over 3K discount when ordering a C4S (March-Build). At this time of year, in NH nonetheless, 5-6K for dealer inventory is probably possible. If you can get 6K when ordering a custom-build, I recommend you write a book on negotiation for Porsche enthusiasts.

Good luck.

Thanks. The discount for my factory build car is in fact $6K. I have it in writing and am dealing with the sales manager at the dealership.

I got roughly the same discount as you (4.7%). You might be able to push for a little bit more, although I personally don't believe in pushing it to the limit. I want both sides to feel good about the deal. Check out the various threads on discounts, but compare the numbers based on percentage off, not $$ off.

I'm considering doing European delivery. Can you give us the skinny?

Thanks.

wjs-i can tell you that i have been quoted as high as 8% off of a build, and as low as $500. depending on the amount of business that you have done with a dealership, including and more importantly the business that you have sent in as referrals, you are awarded a better discount. if you develop that kind of a positive business realationship with the g.m., you will get the big discounts. there are a bunch of c4s launch cars sitting around for months for 102k at various dealerships-if you have the appropriate relationship, you can get some significant discounts there.

There are now two special delivery periods during the year at Zuffenhausen. One in the Spring and the other in the Fall. They call them the Grand Tour. (You have to sign up for it). I originally was looking for a June 06 delivery to coincide with a summer vacation in Europe but my dealer suggested the Spring Grand Tour (11-12 May 06) as the factory goes out of its way to do stuff for you. (I have picked up a car just the regular way and got very little there). First, they throw a cocktail party on the 11th for all the tour folks, followed by a dinner at their 'casino.' The next day (12th) they take you on a VIP tour of the factory, and then later, over to Weissach for a tour and some 'hot laps' in whatever is hottest in the product line at the time. I'm assuming an old GT may be laying around along with a new 997 Turbo. Then they return you to Zuffenhausen to 'collect' you car where they go through all the details on it, etc., finally ending with a sort of departure dinner. After that, you're cleared hot to do your thing for the next XX weeks. Included in a factory delivery are two weeks of licensing and full coverage insurance (I have elected to go for three weeks) and then you return the car to Porsche (ideally at Zuffenhausen) where they check it out and prep it for shpping. It then essentially reenters the shipping queue and you get it at your hometown dealership in 8-10 weeks. THAT will be the most trying for me!!

Do people still buy a Porsche from a dealer in Germany, drive it till its "used" then ship it back? Is it still cheaper? I always used to hear these stories.
