For a dissenting view: I've had exactly one black car (BMW). Never again! Besides the dirt and swirl challenges, to my eyes black hides the sleek lines of P-cars. (as some noted, sometimes thats a good thing)

I've owned two pure black Mercedes (non-metallic) in a row and concur with the summaries here that it is a lot of work but worth it in the end. However, I decided to go with Midnight Blue for the 997 because I wanted something different and because I'm trying to fool myself into thinking that dark blue won't show the swirls as easily as black (but will show them plenty well) because it is metallic.
I should also add that I'm not quite as nuts as Ben, but just doing a "quick" simple car wash on my black Benz takes me 4 - 6 hours to make it look proper. A detail is 2 days, so I just pay others I trust to do it in one day and then touch up myself.

I disagree too. After having had black, never again. Currently own Arctic Silver and love it.
Silver is a classic Porsche color, timeless, great for resale, and looks better over time than black with less effort. Black looks great but requires a great deal more work to keep it so for more than 2 years.
Silver also shows the lines better - just look at that Carrera GT in the post above this one!

Edit: Hey the GT Silver Carrera GT turned into a Seal Grey 997 Cab!

I have Lapis Blue, all my friends thought it was black for months!!!
It shows everything!! (dirt, dust and chips) I would definitely buy dark colors again, it looks so nice when clean and its a color that not everyone chooses

I have a Baja Sol "The original California Car Duster" and that thing just puts these oily streaks on my beautiful black paint, so I've only used it once. What's the trick with these things to keep them from oiling up your car?
