I totally missed the boat on adding TPMS, I like to blame my dealer for not educating me better on the need. That said, anyone know if it would be possible to put in the OEM TPMS by the dealer?

 

currently they say it's not.

there are plenty of aftermarket solutions (tirerack.com has the leading provider's product)

there's always something else, don't stress over it

I'm genuinely sorry you guys got mis-informed. TPMS was supposed to come out when the 997/S first came out, but was delayed a year. Therefore maybe the wiring harnesses and displays have the necessary features in place. If so it could be retrofitted (at a price! (jerks)). Minimme, IMHO, you should call the dealer and let 'em know how pi**ed you are and make them research to find out if the retrofit is possible. There's always the aftermarket version.

Nahhh, no way, I'd say the median age is more like 40. ... Guess we could find out by tabulating the responses. But then that would only represent the median age of those who responded - not really an accurate description - oh well.

Sadly, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is not an easy retrofit (meaning expensive). There is a lot to that system,--not the least of which is special fittings inside each wheel. Tire pressure has become such a big deal to the Fed that DOT has mandated that all vehicles have some sort of TPMS in every car starting in Model Year 07.

Thanks to discussions on this forum I added it to my already insanely long options list some time back, when I felt that having no spare tire and no TPMS would be a formula for a bad trip.

Porsche has implemented what I think is the better of two designs into all their cars. While some are somewhat 'idiot gauges,' the Porsche design will actually be useful in delivering true TP information all the time,--and you can even monitor a tire's progress in pressure as it warms up (a 1.5 psi growth for every 10 degrees F of temp gain).

It is a direct result of legislation passed as a result of an excess number of deaths on US highways that involved a lot of Ford SUVs that were running seriously under inflated tires, which subsequently failed and several lives were lost. As I recall, about 60 people were killed in the period of a year,--so that's roughly the cost to the DOT to mandate a change.

This is another reason many of us list our options so as to promote inquery as to why a particular option was chosen.

So, another trip to the dealer to add to my spec is planned for today, You helped me make my mind up.

I left off the TPMS (and 267 auto dimming mirrors), as I thought I'd never use it.

My rationale was 'How difficult is it to check the pressures regularly?' I suppose the answer is not difficult at all, but you have to remember in the first place and then not just put it off until later.

It could be all to easy to end up in a situation as Edgy descirbes, where having not checked the pressures may tip the balance against you.

Secondly, I know I'd end up hacked off too for not getting everything I wanted on the spec. It's not as if I'll buy a Porsche every day, so I'd better get it right.

Hope you guys can get a retro sorted!

drop speed limit from 55 to 35
special windshield sensors which stop car if rain is too heavy
special warnings if driver doesn't have both hands on wheels
Eliminate cup holders so no coffee breaks while driving

Mandatory TPMS what hogwash.

 

Yeah. And the next thing you know they'll put in the most obnoxious seat belt warning that keeps going off even when you're just sitting in your driveway....
