(Just wanted to complete the thought here.)

If the actual oil level is 0.59 L low, however, the 0.4 Segment will stay lit and not flicker. In fact if the level is between 0.21 and 0.59, the 0.4 Segment will stay lit continuously and not flicker because of the ± 0.2 gauge accuracy.

So if your gauge is showing one segment low in oil, and it’s not flickering, your actual oil level is between 0.21 and 0.59 L low. So if you put in more than 0.21 L of oil, you could be potentially overfilling. So to be on the safe side, if you wanted to add oil when it’s only one segment down I would only add 0.2 L of oil at a time {or slightly less than a ¼ of a QT (0.211 QT)} because of the gauge accuracy factor.

In my case, I am down two segments with no flickering, which means my actual oil level is between 0.61 and 0.99 L low. And it could take as little as 0.61 L, or as much as 0.99 L to fill to maximum.

The manual recommends adding only 0.5 L or QT at a time when filling, and then checking with the electronic gauge. I would add that once the oil level has reached the 1 Segment low level when refilling, add only a ¼ of a QT at that point, and then check to see if all segments are lit:

All the same story. I had 1/4 consumption first 2000 - 3000 miles. Since then not measurable. Currently at a 15000 miles. Motor is clean both in the compartment as well as underneath. With clean I mean no oil. Dust and sanda can appear. As soon as that start to get sticky in certain areas you have to start looking closer.

Beyond the good analysis of OCBen and others: make sure you take the reading in a consistent way. For instance a flat road. I have seen a bar difference dependent on how you put the car, temperature of the motor, etc.

My P-car came one "bar" down. Just turned 1,000 miles on the way to the dealer this morning to have bad headlight-alignment reporting sensor replaced and saw it was down two bars. Had them top it off using a bottle?/container? of Mobil-1 I brought with me.

I call my dealer yesterday and they told me wait till when it is 3 bars down and start adding 1/3 quart oil at a time and re-measure again. one bar = 0.4L and like what Ban said there is alway +/- 0.2L. I don't think they should add one quart in when there is two bars down.

To add another data point--oil was at the top level when delivered, hasn't deviated from that -- I've got 400 miles on it so far

I added half a quart at 3,800 miles, another half at about 7,000 miles, and changed it at 9,800 miles. Haven't added any since then (now 15,000 - yikes!) but I probably need to add a half qt+. About the same as prior p-cars.

I have 1300 miles on my car and added a 1/2 qt this morning. The guage went from 2 bars unfilled to only the top bar unfilled. That top is certainly not the easiest to get on and off. I miss a dipstick.

Anybody remember that site where you could buy Mobil 1 at a good price including shipping? It was posted somewhere not long ago, not more than a month ago I don't think. Haven't been able to find it in my searches. Frustrating.

Default No mobil oil in cyberspace

I did a large internet search and found it nowhere. I bought a case at local mobil gas station. Even pep boys did not carry it in their store.

I needed 2 quarts at 1500 miles.

If you find the site please post.

A little over 700 miles and no noticable oil use.

The would be me! The price is now $5.15 per quart.

If you can't find it locally Park Place Mercedes-Benz in Dallas has Mobil 1 0w40 on sale for $4.95 per quart and a flat $7.50 to ship up to 24 qts. to your door. No tax and no oil recycle surcharge (if applicable)!

I am down two bars with 1100 total miles. Which Mobil 1 is recommended. For W0-W40, there is the European version, the regular and the Trisynthetic? I don't know if the trisynthetic is new.

2 bars down @ 400 miles added .5 qt. went up 1 bar. Using 0-40W European for both the 997 & Cayenne.
