Default 997 Running In Period

Will I really need to run in my 997 C4S Tip for 2,000miles when (and if !) it arrives on Wed 18th as promised? I will of course obey (!) but I seem to remember only having to keep below 4,000rpm for 500miles in my 1998 Boxster.

This has gotten discussion ad nauseum elsewhere in the rennlist.

I believe the USA models are suggested to limit them to 4000 rpm for the first 2000 miles. Years ago Porsche used to recommend 4000 for the first 500 miles, then 4500 to 1000, and then 5000 to 1500 miles, and then 5500 to 2000 miles. Then you're cleared hot! Essentially, I would recommend two good cautions. (1) Warm it up conservatively; and (2) vary the engine speeds alot during the break in period. (Avoid or don't even use the Tempostat (cruise control) during the break in).

Porsche has been extremely conservative in their 'suggested' break in routine. I think if you exercise reasonable judgement you can drive the car rather aggressively once it's warmed up sufficiently. I would certainly not track the car for those first 2000 miles because that sort of use isn't really varying the engine right. But, remember that you're not going to break that thing. It is a Porsche and with reasonable restraint you will be just fine.

I had mine out the other day and I have almost 600 miles on her, I did take it up a couple off times to 6000K, I just couldn’t help myself, I kept it under 4250K before 500 miles. As the miles get closer to 2000 I will rev her up more and more. I just can't see keeping it under 4200 rpm and then all of a sudden start to red line the thing. I would just vary you driving style and use common sense, but I wouldn’t baby it (I wouldn’t thrash it either) Just drive normally then get into it every so often. But this is just my opinion I’m sure you will get plenty of conflicting opinions. Good luck with your new car.

When you get to 1000miles, increase your maximum throttle from 4200 to 5200. Don't do 5200 at every stoplight, just do it pretty much when you feel like it. Makes the breakin a breeze.

Vary engine speeds every five minutes (i.e.alot) for the first couple hundred miles; that is shift gears all the time even when going a steady MPH. The piston rings are supposedly seating at the very beginning and varying engine speed is said to be verrrry impt at this time for future engine power.
