997 Service Manuals
Like some of you I'm a do-it-yourselfer who gets a lot of satisfaction from changing my own oil, changing the plugs, changing brake pads, replacing belts, water pump, fuel injectors, etc.
So in anticipation of doing some minor service like the above on my own, I'd like to get my hands on an electronic copy of the complete 997 shop manual, either DVD or CD version. Someone here once offered copies for an exorbitant price that would make any Super Bowl ticket scalper proud. I balked when I heard the price.
Now I personally don't have a problem with getting a copy for my own personal use, copyright laws notwithstanding. If you intend to use it for profit, as in using it in your own service business, I can see where that might get you into hot water. But for your own personal use, I personally don't have a problem with that.
So are there any of you out there who would like to chip in and get a copy if I were to buy one at full price? If so, please post that you would so I can get a head count.
Or does anyone have another source for service manuals?
(I swear, one of the first things I would do is study the schematics and figure out how to silence that annoying you-know-what.)

I'll have to wait until I have access to my ISP's inbox where I believe I have the information. So basically it will be like a group type buy, where the cost is to be split among those interested. The more of you there are, the less it will cost you each. I'm hoping to get the cost down to $20 each or less. But I'll post the info as soon as I get it.

Ben,---are you referring to the factory service manual? Many years ago I used to have a set for my 911. They don't come cheap. I'm assuming that Porsche has gone the way of hosting this on a dvd?

Yep, the factory service manuals. And you're right, they don't come cheap. I had a source who could get me a copy on CDs (don't know how many it would take). Obviously DVDs would be preferable. Don't know if this source is still available. It was last summer that I last heard. If not him, then ordering from the dealership is the only alternative. And from what I last heard, a single copy goes for more than $500, and if that's the case, there may not be enough takers here to make it worthwhile.

Years ago the paper versions were about $300 +. Not surprised that they would be around $500. Then you have to keep them current with factory revisions, etc.
For what we pay for these things they should have the manuals uploaded on a server that we can all get to and in a PDF format.
But then, I'm from the 21st Century. Don't want to suggest anything that is too advanced technologically.
Ironically, Porsche would stand to gain in this as owners would inadvertantly screw things up inside as they do some of their work and ultimately bail on the job and go to a real repair shop... Porsche would be able to sell a lot more repair parts this way!

Count me in. 3, and counting.

It seems to me now that it might be sold on a subscription basis. The base price might include up to a year's worth of updates. If that's the case, I wonder if it's also sold as is, without future updates, at a much lower price. And if that's the case, it would seem better to wait until the influx of revisions has slowed to a trickle as a result of finally correcting errors in the original release. Of course, assuming the 997 won't be changing significantly anytime soon.
On my way home tonight I'll check with my Tech friend at the dealership to find out what I can.
