[QUOTE=Kevin H. in Atl..]Is the 3.8 a new block?
Is the 997 3.6 a new block? /QUOTE]
NO and NO
The 3.6 litre engine of the new 911 Carrera largely corresponds to the
3.6 litre engine of the 911 Carrera from model year 2004. The original out-
put has been increased from 235 kW (320 hp) to 239 kW (325 hp) and LEV
certification achieved by fine-tuning the components. The weight reduction
measures implemented have reduced the total weight of the engine to
444.45 lbs from 449.08 lbs (996).
The 3.8 litre engine of the 911CarreraS is essentially based on the 3.6 litre
engine of the 911Carrera. Thanks to increased displacement as well as ad-
justment and tuning of the components involved, the new 3.8 litre engine pro-
duces an output of 261 kW (355 hp).
This engine also has LEV certification.
The 3.8 litre displacement of the new 911CarreraS has been achieved on
the basis of the proven 3.6 litre engine by increasing the bore diameter from
3.78 in to 3.90 inwhile retaining the stroke of 3.26 in. The aerodynamic
pump losses resulting from the in- creased internal air movement of the
3.8 litre engine have been reduced by increasing the circulation cross sections
of the crankcase from the 3.6 litre engine and optimally matching them to
the new basic requirements. This guar- antees that the gases in the
crank chamber will pulse with low losses, despite the larger
displacement of the 3.8 litre engine, and further increases
the overall performance of the engine, particularly in the
upper rpm range. it gives the 3.8 litre engine.

If so, would this imply 987 engines are classified as M97 engines as well?
I understand the 996 Turbo block is based on the 911 GT1 block with ancestry to the 964 block. Is the 996 Turbo block technically designated as an M96? If not what is the actual designation?

I do not know it's actual designation
The GT3-Motor as well as that of the turbo and GT2 possess that 964 crankshaft housings.
It is stable and more resistantly designed than that the m96-Motoren. and as well are true dry-sump engines
