Default Mobil 5-30

My oil needs topping off. Electronic monitoring system shows 1 bar down. I ran out of 0-40. Would it hurt to use the 5-30 Mobil 1 I have in my garage. I have 1700 miles on my 3.6. I will buy some 0-40 next week.

Mixing the two is perfectly fine.

I wouldn't worry about topping it off at one bar down. I too am at 1700 miles with one, sometimes two, bars down. I plan to change the oil at 2k and top off then. Each bar is equal to 0.4 liter or 0.423 qts. The difference between the minimum and maximum marks is approximately 1.27 qts. It's also ok to drive at the minimum level according to the manual. But as soon as that minimum bar starts flashing the oil level is below minimum.

As for adding a little 5-30 to 0-40, I don't believe it will hurt, especially in an emergency (i.e. it's flashing and you need to drive it), provided you're adding synthetic to synthetic.

I wouldn't add any oil until you are two segments down. I would not add more then one quart of 5W-30 weight oil except in an emergency (oil light flashing). I also hate not having a dipstick.

This is from the '06 997 manual:

Engine Oil Recommendation

Recommended oil viscosity ranges dependent on ambient temperatures

Ambient temperature seasonal

SAE Viscosity Range engine oils

generally above –13°F/–25°C SAE 0W-40, 5W-40, 5W-50 approved by Porsche

generally below –13°F/–25°C SAE 0W-40 approved by Porsche

When are most 997 owners doing there first oil and filter change? When does Porshce rec. their first oil change and usually how much do dealer change for this? As you guess, yes I'm a waiter.
