Default Do I need to pay sales tax if I buy in CA (private seller) and Register in AZ?

I'm picking up my first Porsche tomorrow. I live in AZ, we are lucky in that we are not required to pay sales tax when you purchase a car from a private seller.

Tomorrow I'm flying to California to buy a 997 from an individual (not dealership). I'm assuming I will not need to pay sales tax since I am registering the car in Arizona. Please let me know if this assumption is correct or not.

For purchasing a car in CA from a private parter, you pay the sales tax when you register the car with DMV. If you are going to register the car in AZ, I do see any reason you will need to pay the CA sales tax. Good luck and enjoy your P-car. Can you list the spec.. Post a lot of pic too.

That is correct. You pay the sales & use tax in the county and state the car will be registered, not where you bought the car.

I bought my car in the County of Los Angeles, which has a higher tax rate than the County of Orange, where I live and where the car is obviously registered.

As said above... Nope, you will pay the tax at the time of your license plate application form...

In Arizona, when you purchase a car from an idividual (as opposed to a dealer) you will NOT pay any sales tax when registering the car. His question was will out of state purchase affect this rule. I had briefly looked into this and I am pretty sure that you will not have to pay sales tax (but I am not 100% sure).

I bought a BMW in California and only paid license fees when I registered it in AZ. No sales tax either place

What you haven't addressed is how you are going to get the car from Cal. to Ariz.? If you plan to drive it, you're going to need temporary tags from Cal. even though you won't have to pay Cal. sales tax. (I'm assuming, but don't know, if Cal. issues temporary tags). That's what I did when I bought my new 997S from a dealer in Ohio and drove it back to NY. The dealer got me temporary Ohio tags good for 30 days. I didn't have to pay tax in Ohio, but did when I registered the car in NY.

unlike New York, new car in CA doesn't have plate (and no windshield sticker neither). CA DMV would mail it to the registered owner. As for used car, the plate and balance of the registration time goes with the new owner. Not sure about the rule for out of state buyer.

I bought my GT3 from a private party in Texas...drove it back to AZ and registered it there with NO sales tax. You can obtain a permit online from AZ for the window while you drive it back. I did this also with my 992 tt with no tax..

Wow, thanks for all the replys. I did exactly what Wasatch suggested. The permit was only $1 and was good for 3 days. It appears that I will not have to pay sales tax. But fear not, Californians, the great state of Arizona will get my $$$ from me one way or another. I think the excise tax will be around $1400 per year. Ouch.

BTW, this car is bitchin!

I think you mean to say the annual registration fee.
