Default MFGCNF At Last!

Submitted my order some time back but had to wait and wait for the dealer's allocation to catch up. It was finally plugged in and "Assigned a Production Number."

Delivery 12 May. Official 'waiter' now.

Production is,--but (1) I have a special order color (longer prep time) and (2) want to be there for the Spring in Europe and their "Grand Spring Tour."

Having picked up cars in the past there at Zuffenhausen it's a lot of fun, and gives you the opportunity to drive the cars as they should be on the autobahns, and on alpine mountain passes!

Porsche handles most of the work for you. All you do is pay the extra fee (about $2500 these days) and show up with a current passport, international drivers' license, and be prepared to enjoy 2 weeks or more over in Europe. Essentially, if you want a European vacation, this takes care of your transportation needs! You can simply arrive at the Flugplatz (airport) in Stuttgart and then run over to Zuffenhausen to pick up the car. During two periods of the year the factory offers an extra special deal on tourist deliveries. In the Spring and in the Fall. This coming spring it will fall on Thursday and Friday, 11 and 12 May 06. It's called the Grand Tour. (See more on the PCNA website). Essentially, you arrive on the Thursday,--they have a cocktail party for the people in the Grand tour, followed by a dinner there, and the following day they give you a VIP tour of the factory production areas, run you out to Weissach,--their R&D center,--where you get some serious rides in their latest equipment (e.g., Carrera GT...) and then return you to Zuffenhausen where you "collect" your car. They show you all the tricks to the car like how to check your tire pressure, oil levels, etc. and give you some personalized break-in instructions. Then a farewell dinner at the factory casino (dining area) and off you go! They also can help with hotel reservations in the Stuttgart area if you need them.

The price is the same for all the factory pick ups throughout the year,--but these two sessions give you more for your money, with the special tours, rides, and dinners.

The money really goes toward two weeks of German auto registration, full insurance, etc. All you have to do is basically show up and have a good time!

I plan to break the car in there,--will be taking 3 weeks instead of the usual 2. Mostly going south this time into Austria, Switzerland, and northern Italy. Maybe Monacco and down into the Amalfi coast area of Italy. If you keep the hammer down you can easily rack up 2000 miles in that amount of time! You later return the car to Zuffenhausen and fly back to the states. The car goes through their checkin and check out at the factory one more time, gets prepped for shipping, and then placed with the other state-side destined autos. It will ultimately be delivered a second time,--to your home town dealer,--8-10 weeks later depending upon location. There are some other drop off locations in Europe, but returning it to Zuffenhausen ensures that it doesn't get too much further delayed.

There's nothing quite like picking up your car at the factory!

Dan

Very nice, but if it's two of you, where do you put your luggage while in the car? Three weeks worth...

Another reason why NOT to order a Carrera 4S. There is virtually no trunk in the 4. It's totally impractical as a GT now.

Dan - I need some clarification about two of your options. You have to order the Delete Model Designation so they can Paint the Model Designation that is no longer there? Sorry, but I obviously missed something in the translation, or maybe I was out sick that day. Can you (or anyone) explain this one to me?

That's about how long I had to wait. Don't worry the winter will pass quickly. Subscribe to a few Porsche journals, read as much as you can and the time will go by. Congratulations on the order; I wish I had the ceramic brakes. Will eventually get them sometime soon.

Here's the way this works at Zuffenhausen. First you delete the normal metallic "Carrera S" from the rear deck lid and then you pay $130 to have them put "Carrera S" back on,--but this time with it painted in the car's color. It's sort of halfway between a total deletion of the model designation and leaving the original on. It just doesn't stand out as much. The dealer had to walk me through that one.

I'd like to see a picture of the painted on model designation.

Also glad to see someone going for Gulf Blue. How do you specify Gulf Blue, is there a code for it?
