Default Retrofit 996 18" wheels for 997

Has anyone retrofited 996 18" Carrera2 (5 spoke) wheels to use on 997? I know they have different offsets but will they work if I add spacers? These older wheels were my spares and now I am thinking of using them on the 997 for track use instead of selling them.

Which 996 do you have? If it's the light weight 5 spoke on 02-04 (not turbo-look or sport or classic design), I can buy them from you. Note my location in SF also.

Sorry I am not sure about how they fit on 997. I'd think they would stick out a little with spacers.

50/65 mm offset for 996 (depending on wheels)

40/63 mm offset for 996 GT3

57/67 mm offset for the 997 (depending on wheels)
55/67

The 997 wheels sit more inboard than the 996 wheels, so you would not use spacers.

996 to 997 rear is a direct fit but will sit in 2mm and the front you will want to use a spacer since the front will sit in 7mm! Not good (make sure it doens't hit the caliper).

Personally I would throw spacers on front and rear. Last thing you want is your wheels to sit in further than they already do from the factory especially in the front where you are just asking for more understeer!

1) Has anyone done this retrofitting. Is it worth the trouble?
2) Sounds like Porsche 5mm spacer is not enough up front. I would have to buy aftermarket to add at least 7mm front? 2mm rear doesn't sound like big deal with or without spacers.
3) Will they look good? And most importantly, will spacers be safe to use on the track?

That's not right. 996 front wheels will sit outboard (away from the centerline of the car) by 7mm, not inboard. More offset = more inboard. Remember, offset = the distince b/t the centerline of the wheel and the hub mating surface of the wheel.

Using too little offset (ie., too far outboard) front wheels of a can potentially cause handling problems including increase in scrub radius, instability under braking, and camber gain, and affects wheel rate (i.e., the spring rate the wheels 'see' due to the longer lever arm). Though I doubt 7mm will make a discernable difference in feel.

The overall diameter of the 997 tire is one inch greater than the 996 tires; that's three fewer inches of linear travel per rotation for teh 997 with 996 tires/wheels. Will that mess things up with ABS, PSM, instruments etc?

2. See my above post.
3. Spacers are safe to use on track provided that you use the required longer bolts that generally come with them. Also, hubcentric spacers are generally better than non-hubcentric spacers. Hubcentric spacers have a notable inner bore lip on them so that the wheel is centered. properly. Also, having run a myriad of setups on various cars, the most desirable is a properly fitting wheel w/o spacers, as spacers introduce extra mating surfaces and potential imbalance issues. For example, small bits of rust from the rotor hub area can embed on the spacers and through mounting/dismounting cause wheel shimmying, etc.

There is nothing really wrong with spacers in general, but definitely not desirable over a properly configured wheel.

If you go smaller all the way around, psm, abs will be happy, but your speedo will be off. If you mix and match diameters, you can run into problems. If you go to 18's on hte 997 chassis, your best bet is to use a tire size that has the same rolling diameter (ie, larger sidewall/lower aspect ratio) as stock, as the suspension was designed for the larger diameter wheel/tire combo.
