Thought that would get your attention..

An interesting thread here that started out about the Caymen, I seem to have struck a nerve defending 997 ownership!

Let me know if I misinterpreted the guys remarks as I took exception to them after being a very happy 997S owner..!

I went to post something over there and just thought not too. Have some of them come to a gathering of Rennlist members such as occured this weekend in Baltimore and perhaps they would get a clue...

Gary,
I did not think you were out of line at all. Good job!

Have to agree as well, you were totally in line. But, don't waste your time on people that you obviously figured out that are either too cheap to support this board and then have every excuse in the world when you challenge them on it and/or they are jealous of what you or others have and then put them down as just needed to identify with the marque. Classic case of jeoulsy and cheapness on the other guys part. YOu should know by now being on the board for awhile that you can NEVER win with those idiots nor should you care 2 ***** what they have to say. They love to get a rise out of those poeple that they wish they were. Good Job just walking away at this point. That thread will die quickly once you ingnore the child.

Are there guys who buy 911s just to have a prestigious car. Absolutely, but I'd be surprised if many 911 owners fall into that category. Over the years I've had the pleasure of meeting well over 20 911 owners, and each and every one of them were Porsche enthusiasts who had a great deal of knowledge of Porsche in general and the 911 in particular.

Personally I've always thought it was foolish to buy a car to impresss others since the vast majority of people couldn't care less what others are driving. So I always buy what I like and if others like it that's fine, but if they don't I won't lose any sleep over it.

Gary: I have a somewhat different opinion about your contribution to the 911 thread than what others have stated. And since you asked for opinions (I wouldn't say anything if you hadn't), I think you over-reacted to their stereotype of 997 owners and spoiled their fun. They were having their own closed session of mutual reinforcement of a shared stereotype (the one you responded to wasn't the first to mention it), and YIKES! - here comes an outsider to protest the stereotype. And you weren't very subtle either. Several categories of P-owners on rennlist share and mutually reinforce stereotypes of other categories of P-owners. Such stereotypes help people of limited intelligence and knowledge (that's all of us) simplify a complex variety of people types within another category, and it also helps build cohesion among those who share the stereotype. Besides, I get a kick out of reading such stereotypes, even when they're about me.

I do tend to over-react, but I have less tolerance than some. Thank you for a more tolerant look at this.

I agree with Jim on this one. Best way to counter stereotypes like that is with a little more patience. IMHO of course.

Remember, there is a lot of truth in all stereptypes, and Rennlisters are not the majority of 997 owners.

Life is too short for such intolerance. Most ignorant people are quite adept at revealing themselves. If you doubt this, just hang around with me for a while. I usually takes me less than 2 sentences!!
Boxsters and 911s are just different cars. I had ordered a Box S, but found that the 997 better fit my lifestyle and desires. The Box does have awesome handling characteristics, but the 997 is a easier car to live with at my advanced age. Given the close proximity of price, I just felt and still do feel that with the 997 I got the car that better met my needs. Would I like to have a Box? Yep. Would I give up my 997 to do so? No way. Are Box drivers different than 997 drivers? Well, probably. But then, my lady likes red clam sauce and I prefer white.
