XCZ Sport Shifter Option - opinions wanted
Can anyone give me some good reasons why i shouldn't get this option?
I've driven an 997 with and without it, and I like it, but I'm concerned about the long term effects of having a short throw shifter.
All of the feedback I have thus far makes me think I should get it.
What do real life owners of a 997 with this option think?

Concerned about the long term effects??? What in the world do you mean by that? Effects such as possibly developing a stronger right arm as a result? Being so spoiled by a short shifter that you refuse to drive any other car without one?
Well, I do know that the shifting will get easier and smoother over time, which is not to say they are not already easy and smooth straight from the factory. ... Is that what you mean?

My thoughts after having had the standard manual shifter for 9 months going to the sports one...
The box feels smoother and I no longer get the notchy feeling I sometimes had when going into first gear on the standard box.
The shorter throw definitely makes it more fun to drive, even more so if you're in a "spirited driving" moment, as the slightly faster gear changes means you are back on the gas that little bit sooner.
Bottom line is I recommend it.

Having only driven mine, which has a factory-installed sport shift, I am no expert. But I can say that there are no negatives to the sport shift. Its, short, direct, and positive. In fact, its more like the shifter on a good Japanese car than the shifter on one of the older model Porsches. No question about it, you should get the sport shift!

This is some great feedback, thanks everyone! I'll definitely get it.
Someone asked about what long term effects? I've had some mechanics tell me that short throw shifters can get difficult to put into reverse and make it easier to downshift into the wrong gear over time. They also suggest that it can be harder getting into first on a cold morning when they get broken in. However, I've not found anyone that has experienced these problems yet with the 997 XCZ shifter.

Oh, is that what you meant. Sorry for being so flippant.
Hmmm, I don't know what trannies those mechanics had in mind when they voiced their concerns, but on a well engineered sports car transmission such as on a Porsche that should never, ever be a problem.
Get it, you'll be glad you did. And your long term effect will be a perpetual grin!

I have now driven almost 1000 miles with the OEM 997 SSK.
There was really nothing wrong with the OEM 997 GTS shifter with 25K miles of use.
It was butter smooth and I never felt pause when shifting quickly on a heel and toe in the canyons.
The first gear balkiness the OP refers to is more a function of the temp and fluid than the shifter type.
After warm up, 1st gear is not an issue.
After extensive research, I chose the OEM SSK that I assume was standard on the 997.2 GT3, RS and GT 2.
I sent the brand new unit directly to Function First owner Luca Lazic to personally install his Shift Right Kit that replaces the plastic wear parts with
metal bits. Had my mechanic install and road rest the new box and find it pretty much flawless.
My 2 to 3 and 4 to 5 shifts now do not require my right shoulder to come off the seat back. I shift with my wrist now, not my arm.
Remains butter smooth and reduces side to side play/slop in gear and neutral detent by about 50%, in gear by more.
The Numeric is reportedly a “tighter”, “ rifle bolt” and more “mechanica”l than the SSK and SRK. I was not looking for added noise, vibration nor friction in an upgrade.
Never sampled one, but if you drive on real roads, on real streets and not on a track in anger…why choose a pure metal, mechanical linkage?
Like suspension bushings or coil-overs-the trade off in NVH, liveability or even DD use does not make sense to me.
Lots of choices out there, but my 2007 997.1 base Carrera with 80K miles had a sweet OEM 6MT. I was looking for that precision and smoothness combo
and found it with my mod.

Agree with above. Had the ssk with function first shift solution. Was great.
Put the numeric shifter in and was slightly better in regards to shifting.
Can’t go wrong with either. The SSK is a definite must do either way.
