Well obviously it works but if the engine is optimized for 93 AKI, I guess my X51 is only 370hp with 91 aki. The AK sensors would have to retard timing to work on the lower quality fuel.

I use " Ultra 98" which runs about 1.17$ a gallon ... one of the perks of living in a oil-producing country

Anyone who lives on or drives through Redwood City, CA can get 100 octane unleaded at the Union Station on Woodside Road. $4.76 a gallon. Makes a nice cocktail with the 91.

There are Union 76 stations in the LA and Orange County area that carry the 100 Octane Un-leaded fuel. I think they list them on the web. The last one I visited was in the Newport area.

Here's a short list I found for gas stations selling 100 octane fuel.

Redondo Beach, Unocal 76
1870 South Elena, Redondo Beach, CA. Near Avenida Del Norte.

Pomona - Phillips Ranch, Unocal 76
Phillips Ranch in Pomona, CA. Take 60 fwy, exit phillips ranch road and go north, then turn right on village loop and it will be on left hand side (about 1/2 of fwy exit).

Pasadena, Unocal 76 100 Octane unleaded (blue)
155 E Glenarm St

Sears Point, Unocal 76
100 Octane unleaded (blue)
114 Octane leaded (orange)
Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, CA. ->MAP<-

Woodland Hills, Texaco
101 Octane
Woodland Hills, CA. Northwest corner of DeSoto and Van Owen

Agoura, Unocal 76
100 Octane
28203 Dorothy Dr., Agoura, CA. at the Chesbouro off ramp of the 101 freeway in Agoura.

Here is a mixing chart for using 100 octane with 91.

Synergy - There used to be a 76 station in SJ with 100 Octane but I can't find the info in the forums right now.

2 wh,

How are you measuring octane in the UK? Research or Motor?

In the US, pumps are labeled as (R + M / 2) so our numbers are likely different.

We have 92-93 RON fuels in Chicago - but they oxygenate them in the winter and performance drops a bit... as does mileage.

Hey, since you guys are paying 5+USD per US gallon, you should get the good stuff! <g>

Cheers,

-don

Just filled up with 100 octane at 6.20 per gallon (feels like I'm in europe). I spent about $90 to fill the tank with 14.5 gallons. I wish I had a blind test. Too many variables to see if it had any effect vs 91.
There was another guy filling up his WRX STI. Says his car has about 480hp with mods and overboost needs 100octane. He had a "special" meet tonight.
Will update once I'm done with the angeles crest drive tomorrow.

Many years ago I needed a higher octane to keep from trashing a custom turbo 911 engine. I used Octane 105 as an additive agent. It definitely worked in those days along with the highest pump octane I could find. Eventually I had the engine rebuilt with shims to shim away the cylinder heads a bit further to give me a lower compression ratio. That, coupled with a very modest boost pressure, was finally something the car could live with. I had the distributor curve redone, and ultimately I never did perceive of a performance drop,--but it then ran on just super or premium unleaded. Today's knock sensors are incredible,--and handle real-time engine management better than anything else.

In the Montreal area the regular premium fuel is 91. However the Petro Canada stations also have super premium that is 94. Without a doubt, the 94 is much better. The car runs better and there is zero knocking. Given a choice, I will always fill up with the 94.

When I am travelling through Vermont and New Hampshire, where the 94 is not available, I pick up the 91, which is ok for most types of driving, but there is a difference that makes the extra .20 gallon seem cheap when I have a choice.

OTOH, the car will run fine on the lowest octane available at your local gas station. I wonder if daily driving would be significantly impacted since we have so much HP/Tq anyway.

A tank full of 100 octane is a waste unless your engine management system recognizes the fuel and adapts to it. The 993 doesn't, and I doubt the 997 does either. 93 or so is about all the engines are set up to use from the factory. You can get that by a 3:1 ratio of 91 to 100. If you have a chip or other funny stuff in your car, your results may vary.

But I would never put 87 in my car unless stranded in the middle of nowhere, and then would drive it like an Oldsmobile, not a Porsche. If you can't hear and feel the difference between 87 and 93, there is something wrong with your ears or your motor.
