It’s kind of weird to discuss financial stuff, but this is internet, who knows I am dog, so I go ahead any way.
I am a relatively young guy( close to 30s), my income is 150K/yr, after tax, has 500K mortgage on a 1,1M house. A wife, 2 small kids.
I am struggling about buying a 997. After reading the great post: (Do you drive the Porsche to a client office?) I decide to keep my daily drive, a Toyota. And only use p-car as a weekend-fun car. Then I find myself don’t get enough seat time. I live in a state with very high insurance cost (the quote I got is 4800/yr), too.
Accumulating $$ is not the purpose of my life. But, is the p-car too expensive to enjoy?
Any thoughts are welcome.

Is that 150k US Dollars? Are you kiddin' me? Now if your P-car happens to be a Carrera GT I might say maybe, especially with a family of four. But a base 997??? Guys making a third of what you're making don't even bat an eye when it comes to paying for one of these. Go ahead and go for it, unless of course your wife has veto power.

Having a 997 as a weekend car is not a bad idea, its kinda like a treat for the end of a work week. Makes it more special when you drive it. But if you don't want that, trade the 997 and Toyota in for a daily car that will give you thrills. M5? E55?

Funny, your financial situation is very smiliar to mine, only no kids. Wait and see what the 997 GT3 turns out to be. For a weekend driver, it's hard to beat. I don't track mine, just drive it through the country.......very fast.

i put down a deposit for boxster a few years ago, but unexpected baby came, so i had to give up boxster.
now wife is ok with sports car, but insist on getting everybody in the car, so 997 is the best choice.
i always pay cash for cars. i put all my extra cash to pay back my mortgage, don’t want to do any investment, heard too many bad stories about it. (Myself is in financial services company). maybe I should order it, and save $$ while it’s bee built?

I have made my living for the past 15 years or so doing nothing but equity investing. At today's mortage rates, it makes much more sense (to someone who can watch the markets and move quickly) to keep their mortages and invest the money. But it's not for everyone.

Heck, $4,800 is a lot even if you drive it every day.
My wife and I pay about $4,000 a year for the two of us on four cars. The 996 is $1,100 a year. That's for a very good policy with State Farm.
You have a bad driving record or something? That's just an insane amount of money to insure one car. No way I'd buy a car if it cost that much to insure.
