I was just in your situation. Yes, use the Porsche website as a basic way to get a handle on what cars the dealers should have. However, it is not complete, and dealers often have just received cars that don't get posted. So I would also drive around and visit 3-4 dealers closer to you in person to talk to them about what they've got and what is coming in. Then you can call the rest and ask them about inventory before making a drive. That way you can also evaluate the dealers and salespeople you actually want to buy from, and I think it will help in negotiating a final purchase vs. meeting them for the first time. Most base 997s in inventory have bi xenons and at least a few other options bringing the MSRP to about $78K - $80K, I found. There aren't many cheaper than that because they would be hard to sell. But there seems to be a good flow of cars throughout all the dealers in the region so if you work at it for a couple of weeks you should end up with what you want. I also know that there is a silver / black 997 coming into Newport Porsche offered at $79 that will arrive in 3-4 weeks (I had a deposit on that but I will cancel since I bought one elsewhere this weekend). Good luck - looking for the car is half the fun (well, maybe not quite half).

The best way to get what you want is to order it. I think you'll find that there are very few minimally optioned cars in and around So Cal, and if you find one or two, chances are good it won't be a color you like.
We wanted a black/black one with only the power seat package, CD changer, MFSW, floor mats, and Tiptronic, and knew the only way to get one configured that way was to order it. The dealer was not happy with the order, and had I not been a good friend of the salesman would not have accepted it for fear of being stuck with it if we didn't take delivery.
