Default RMS Repair Cost?

Sorry if I missed this (I tried to find it in a search) but, with so much hand wringing over RMS, I am wondering what the repair would cost. I hope to keep my S for a long time, and would consider a contract in 3 years, but if the main problem to worry about at that point is RMS would I be spending, say $3000 to insure a potential (other repair risks aside) $1,000 problem? I am talking the basic RMS, not the crank out of line issue, which I am guessing would show itself in 4 years.

$600-800 at an independent shop. About $1K at the stealer. Most of those aftermarket warranties do NOT cover seals.

I HOPE the early 996 problems are gone - in many cases, the 996 could not be repaired with a simple new seal ($800 - $1,000), but had bad tolerances, requiring a whole new engine. I've heard Porsche had changed the seal and, I believe, the internals, along the way, so if for 997 the only worry is just replacing the rear main seal, its not that big a deal.

Good question and good to know the answer. What's the likelihood of it cropping up after the 4 year warranty expires especially if you've never had the problem? Seems like it would be slim.

Some would lead you to belive that it is the end of the world.

Funny thing though.....the part number for the RMS seal (newest 4th generation) starts with 997 (not 996 anymore). Both 996 and 997 models share the same seal.

I've gathered that the RMS problem will show up pretty soon. Mostly when the car is under warrenty. So if you don't have it by that time you're probably good to go a long time. Unless of course you're putting 20 or 30K on the car each year.

Long term ownership? I'm thinking about keeping mine LT too. I worry about the electronics more than the RMS. Trying to keep the car going with a MASSIVE amount of aged electronics..., wow. We're boldly going where no man has gone before..., etc.
