Default Navigation v. Extended Navigation

The 2006 Order Guide lists Option 670: Navigation for PCM, and - new for 2006 - Option 672, Extended Navigation Module. The new Navigation's description cryptically states: "Records route and triangulates vehicle positon in unmapped areas and allows for 'back-track' navigation via GPS and compass coordinates."

In simple English, what does this mean if you never intend to do 'off-roading' in your beautiful new 997?

Its when you go to streets that haven't been updated on the DVD map.

It makes an electronic trail of "bread crumbs" for off-road travel to allow you to retrace your steps back to a road that is in the database. Similar to track left on a boat GPS navigation system.

That is to allow backtracking if you drive on roads that are so new they are not on the "street database" on the Nav DVD.

I ordered the extended NAV...don't know if it's actually available yet though and wouldn't lose sleep over it either way.
The difference in price was about $205 so I figured what the hell.
I wish I could have that attitude with the X51 and PCCB options!
