Here is my advise. Leave it in 5th, and do not accelerate. Let the M3 pass you. When the M3 slows down for round two, you simply look over with a what the #@#% are you doing look.

Now...you win hand down by doing NOTHING. It's not about the speed on public streets, it's all about how you keep your cool. No one wins with street racing. In fact, no one really cares when you win...especially when you risk so much in the process.

Hey Steve, the best way in that particular situation is to put it into third gear and floor it,you can do some speed shifting(power shifting, no clutch) going into fourth,just don't let the revs fall below 5800 rpm's ,you should smoke him!

you hypocritical old nagging farts... some people do buy a porsche for performance (which they are supposed to be made for)... why don't you "street racer whiners" trade your porsches in for boats and you can all sit at the dock in them and talk about how dangerous the water is, or you can tell people you have a fast boat, it says so in the magazine.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the level of stupidity is too often in direct proportion with lack of post count...atleast lately.

Hey IDIOT, WE DO USE THEM FOR PERFORMANCE! They were built for the track. We use them there ALL the TIME! We don't have any unfulfilled desire to risk innocent lives too prove some point to some irresponsible, ignorant, dangerous A-hole, in an M3, because we've spent the weekend using EVERY LAST OUNCE of our cars performance, and we don't have to avoid a single cell phoned, brain dead, Explorer.
This ain't about old farts or nagging, ya see Gator, atleast, is just about to get out of law school. That would be under thirty. Old huh? 37 here. Risking the lives of innocent people in order to get your rocks off, is about as intelligent as knowingly having sex with a PRO, unprotected. Real Damned bright! Ofcourse Darwin gives out awards for those people. Street racers take the innocent with them. Now there's some nagging.

BTW if you have to ask what gear to drop into, you can't drive the car well enough to handle it in ANY gear.

The rev limiter does not protect you on a downshift or a missed shift. This can be a costly mistake for the misinformed. Yes you can shift from 5th to 3rd at 70 miles per hour and remain below redline, quickly up shift to fourth and so on. As long as you remain in the heart of the power band ( 4,000 plus rpm ) you will be in a position to maximize the straight line speed of your car. Hope this helps and keep the racing to the track whenever possible. Innocent drivers should never have to be at risk if something goes wrong!

I think you asked a simple legitimate question and deserve a straight answer/opinion. I am sure that we are all fairly competent people who knows about the risks involved with certain activities. As long as we are not putting anyone else in danger, other than ourselves, I think it is fair to take some calculated risks once in a while. That said, if it was me, I would put in in 4th gear; that way you don't have to be too concerned with the redline, but will still give you good power. Just be sensible and use your good judgement, as I am sure you will. Good luck next time you run into an M3!
