Default 997's in Japan

On a two day visit to Tokyo I spotted three 997's....white, red, black. I also saw a few 996's.

I can go days, traveling from Conn to New York, and not see a Porsche, yet in Tokyo where I am told the 997 goes for $100k + I see loads of them. Go figure.

hang out in shinjuku, ginza and roppongi hills and you'll see plenty of late model p-cars, f-cars and the like. if you've got money in japan, you buy foreign-made--especially cars and apparel.

I have a 997 here in black! My number plate is 997! As far as I know I am the only 'gaijin' non Jap that is who has one! And just so you know what a rip off Japan is my standard 997 cost USD 110,500!!!! BUT, thats cool - the parking is the part that winds me up USD 550 per month!!!!! I hate this place sometimes! The only good part is - I can get up to 150MPH on nearly 90% of my motorway driving : )

Send us a pic of your JDM 997. What are you doing in Japan? How do you stand up to the Skyline battles!

Thanks
Dan

Hey Dan
If you send me your e-mail address I will send you a few snaps! I am from the UK originally but been in Japan for about 4 years all up. Working for a Swiss Logistics company. I know the USA has a lot of nice cars but, here right here on my doorstep in Tokyo I see Enzo's, Carrera GT's, quite regularly AND on a DAILY BASIS, I see Gallardo's All PORSCHES, 360's, 575's, DB9's and a host of other cars! I am still running in the 997 but I had a 2003 996 and after that was run in I raced, Skylines, Evo's and WRX's quite frequently - only on road where high speeds were possible - not endangering anybody and I always won! HOWEVER, I got beaten by a Supra once, I chickened out at about 155 MPH - the Supra went past me at I don't know what speed and scared me!

Incidentally, on a side note, the coolest thing here is, you can go to a showroom and the dealership will GIVE you the car you want to test drive for an hour! So the wife and I regularly get test drives just for fun! The best one was a 360 with a mate, we took a camera and had a real blast!

What are you complaining about, in Holland a 997 (non S) cost kEuro 110,000, which is about k$132,000 at the current rate of exchange and about k$145,000 at the rate earlier this year.

Well, they are USD 185,000 in Australia! And a STUPID USD 300,000 in Singapore!! So I guess we can't really complain at all can we!

Can you not take a little trip over to another EU country and buy?

Porky, I didn't see the plate number on the black 997....could have been you (?). I did see a 996 with the plate number "911". i've been going to Tokyo for 10 years + and never realized you could hit high speeds on the roads....it sound like like a blast. Be careful and good luck with your 997.

I am in Shanghai for a day and saw a yellow 996....wonder what they cost here.

Yes, you can. In Germany they are cheaper, however, as soon as you hit the border, our friend the tax man is requesting about 25% tax on the car, if you bring it in the country within about 6 months..................

The difference with the US is even bigger in tax: about 32% more tax.........
