Question Overheating????

I've been out twice in the past 2 weeks in stop and go traffic and once the car overheated and the second time it was heading there. I managed to get onto a highway and once some clean air got to the car it cooled down pretty quickly.

Anybody else experience this?

So far I have the opposite experience. Temperatures are close to 100 F and sitting in a lot of traffic the oil temperature goes up by 20 F, but the coolant temperature stays steady at 175 F.

And I the same I'm afraid. Until recently, when I finally got the oil temperature to move up a notch while driving hard in the heat, I was beginning to believe the friggin' gauges were stuck in place. Mine's a cold blooded split tail... so far.

Any chance your radiator fins are fouled with leaves or buggage?

I just ran on the track in the Florida heat and my temp was fine. What I did find out is during the tech inspection 2 dealers in our area are blowing out the front end of the cars. A large bunch of leaves came out of mine. They would not be doing this if there were not a problem!

My engine stays at 175F but my oil has gone up as high as 240F in 95F heat in traffic, but thats it. It is extremely important to keep those front radiators clean, they dug a dead bird out of mine during a tech inspection!

Make sure your electric radiator fan is running. That's the only thing keeping the engine cool in low speed traffic. To test, let the car idle for an extended period while watching the temp gauge. The fan should kick in once the temp rises about 20 degrees above normal operating temp. I don't know the exact turn on point for the 997 (would be in shop manual), but I'm sure a mechanic at your dealer could look it up for you.

What's the sport in that? Birds can't fly nearly as fast as a 911. Why not pick on some fast cars to race or are you moving up slowly?

Might also want to check your coolant level in the resevoir--my 997 developed a crack in one of the return hoses leading to the front radiators and preceded to dump small then later large amounts of coolant on the tarmack. She's in the shop now waiting for a replacement hose...Good luck.

yeah, something is wrong. I hear the water cooling systems are very good in Porsches. I myself run my 986S AC full blast in hot weather in stop-and-roll bumper to bumper. Expected problems but none EVER came up.

I just washed the car and the rads are clear. I'm going to check the coolant resevoir in daylight. It was too hard to see in the garage tonight. I haven't noticed anything on the floor of the garage.

Hmmmmmmmmm????
