Default options order help

I orderd a car today and only have a few days to change my options. Someone backed out of their July build so I took their spot. I did not order Sport shifter as or PSE. My thinking was, the new car already has such a reduced throw compared to the 996 cars that it is not necessary. As for the exhaust, it just seems that $2K for what amounts to some different tips and a little louder sound seems high. The stock sound is really nice. Your thoughts?

You can always add both later if you change your mind without too many problems. It might be a nice way to give your car a "birthday present" a year and a bit from now.

Yes, i understand, but I seem to be so busy that I never get around to moding my cars, so if it is worth it, I would like to just order the car that way and be done with it.

that is my thought as well so I ordered the sport (short) shift, the PSE somehow just doesn't appeal to me personally.

have you received you car yet? ie. have you used the SS? i drove a TT with it and it was nice, but the 996 cars had a much longer throw than the 997 cars.

You're right about the shifter. the 997 is alot better than the 996; so you'll probably be very happy with the stock, if not change it yourself in an hour and for less than what Porsche charges.

PSE? I don't get it either. If it ADDS HP I would get it. If it just makes different sounds that's just pissing money away according to my 40-something attitude.

IOW, spending a few thousand more on something I can use or enjoy, like leather or shifters, seems a better idea and less wasted than changing the sound of the cars exhaust.

What can I say, I'm an old fart in the larval stage.

I haven't received my car yet but, after someone posted in this forum that with the sport shifter he was able to shift with just his fingers and wrist motion without having to lift his elbow off the console, and that the shifts were crisp and precise, well that pretty much convinced me to get it without having driven a 997 with it. Guess I'll find out soon, though I'm sure it'll be a little stiff initially until it gets well broken in, and then maybe I'll experience the "it's all in the wrist" shifting.

MMD, i am right there with you. 43 years old and i guess getting to be a fart, not. but i bought myself a fathers day present. the ss may be worth the money, i will have to do more research. the PSE is definately pissing money away. i thing some people have more money or less common sense and don't care, but not me. i buy and sell a lot of cars and this seems to be a pure waste. i have driven several S cars and the sounds the exhaust make are great. if this was not the case, like the 996, i could see spending the $, or if you got some improved preformance. Ditto.

I thought the same as you when ordering my car, as I thought the 997S had a great engine note already coming from a 2000 E39 M5. And, I thought, what a waste of money for the PSE that only changes the exhaust note. HOWEVER, once I heard the PSE, I have to say that I have changed my mind. What a glorious sound...akin to the air cooled generations. I may still not upgrade, but I would certainly think I would spec it on my next 997TT!! BTW, I'm also a 38 y/o fart...

Sorry guys, I get it. Yes, now I get it: the PSE sells itself once you hear it. You still might not decide to buy one but you become a convert when in it's presence. meaning: if the thing were $500 we all would have them. I certainly don't want to upset anybody who bought one because when that guy pulls next to me I'm probably gonna want what he's got!

I have the Sport Shifter. I like it. I'd get it again.

I added the Sport Shifter to my 997S and I am glad I did. It makes shifting even more fun. The shifts are very precise. The shift into 1st and from 1st to 2nd are a bit stiff when the engine and transmission are cold, but this is true with the stock shifter as well. Once the oil temp gets to normal, this goes away. Also as you add miles the shifter becomes even easier to use. There is no issue with increased shifter effort with the short shifter. I think it is a great addition.

The PSE is expensive, especially if you have it installed at the factory for $2400. The sound seems to be an intoxicating one. I resisted buying the PSE until last week. I have one headed in my direction. Cost was $1795 plus shipping from Suncoast Motorsports in Sarasota, FL. I now find that my local dealer will not install it because I did not buy from them. I will install it myself. Initially I will install mufflers only for full-time PSE ON. I may then add the vacuum system with change-over valve, which might give me the ability to have it full-time ON or full-time OFF (by removing the one vacuum hose or putting it back in place). When I get ambitious, I will add the electrical wiring and new Sport button. If I run with full-time ON, this last option seems a waste of time and effort.

I had PSE added to my 996 Carrera 4. It made a huge difference, I think. Of course the 996 stock exhaust was nearly silent.

PSE is pretty much a personal decision. I am 65 and think it is a great addition.

In the end you should get the car the way YOU want it, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

DD694, Is your car a S? Does the $1795.00 include shipping? Sounds like for the little price dif. I would be better off having it ordered on the car from the start?

Price did not include shipping. Shipping cost was about $100 from Florida to me in California. If you want PSE, the factory install is the way to go. It was not available when I got my car last October, so retrofit is my only option.
