Default What Would You Recommend Re: PSE Install

The dealer received my check for the Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE) kit it happened to have in stock, and is holding it for me. Because my car does not have Sport Chrono, a separate (on-off) switch for the center console is needed. The switch is not included in the PSE kit, has its own part number and needs to be ordered separately. Problem is the switch is on back-order from Germany with no ETA. Parts and Service managers both say they can install the PSE without the switch, so its always on, then install the switch later when it arrives. What do you think?

Definitely go for it. I would want it on all the time anyway. Even without the switch the automatic cut-out between certain speeds will still work I think.

I had the same situation. The back-ordered switch took about two weeks to arrive, and installing it took about fifteen minutes. I'd definitely proceed. However, the way it worked for me was that the sport exhaust was always off. The full resonance of the PSE wasn't available until the switch was installed. Maybe your dealer can wire it up differently.

Default PSE Always ON

Here is an interim - or perhaps even a permanent - solution to the lack of a switch for the PSE. Remove the rubber hose indicated by the red arrows from the Electric Change-over Valve in the engine compartment. With this hose removed, PSE is ON fulltime. Thanks to RC at RennTeam.

I had mine hooked up to the sport crono, and hated the exhaust. I pulled the rubber hose as shown above and now it's on all the time and man do I love that deep rumble!

I would install it without connecting the electronics or vacuum hose - just PSE (default is open (loud)). See how you like it. Like many on the 996 board (including me with my prior 996), you may find that you don't need a switch at all. I don't think the installation cost to add the switch later will cost any more later than the incremental cost now, so no harm in waiting.

Default PSE

I just had my installed and I told them to leave off the switch. I love it. I am glad I did not get the switch installed. Of course, since I have a cab it may be easier for me to hear it all the time but I think it sounds great.

Do you have Sport Chrono or not?

After re-reading the Installation Instructions for the PSE, it appears that the default mode without any electronics and/or vacuum connection IS open/loud. Otherwise, removing the line from the car vacuum system at the Electric Change-Over Valve to get full-time ON mode does not make any sense. Also, when you press the Sport button, or the in the case of NON-Sport Chrono cars the ON button, to activate PSE, it is ON more than it is OFF. This seems to dictate that the valve would only actuate to turn the PSE OFF by closing the valve for the brief periods when the quiet mode is enforced between 50 and 80 Km/Hr.

Clearly, as you have inidcated, with no electrics or vacuum connections the PSE installation is ON full-time. All the rest of the installation is to satisfy legal requirements of sound laws in Europe.

Just trying to make some sense out of this.

If it were me I'd just use some other type of switch and place it inconspicuously under the dash where you can reach it. Just some type of toggle switch. I would want to be able to control its use.

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge guys. But with the PSE appart from the sound of the exhaust being different, is there any major difference in performance?

Nope likely a 0% performance gain. But the sound is great, plus it weighs less...

Guys,is the PSE and the resulting increase in sound really worth $2400.00? I orderd the S and the sound is really nice, esp. compared to older 996 cars and the TT. This just seems like a lot of money for the increase in sound.
