Coming home last night on the N.Y. thruway about 1:30 A.M. a gsxr 1000 came up on my left @ about 90 mph. I accelerated to match his speed , we were even he was in the left lane I was in the center lane, he down shifted I down shifted to 3rd, then he cracked the throttle I stayed side by side with him until we hit 145mph. Then I accelerated again pulling away easily pulled in front of him in the left lane went to about 160mph. Then I backed off . He came back to even with me and seemed upset that he couldn't keep up with me, and I think he wanted another try but I was exiting onto the palisade parkway so he was out of luck. I was suprised at how much faster the 997 was at those speeds, when I went after the suzuki I thought I would have a tough time keeping up with him. Just wanted to tell this story to someone I couldn't say anything today because I was with my wife all day and if she heard how fast I was going , well you know the rest...

He was being easy on you. The Gixxer 1000 has top speeds of 180 at least... you had the comforts of being inside of a solid car. Trust me, it's much easier going 160 in a car than on a bike (unless you have the comforts of a track)

Having both a GT3 and a Yamaha R1. I know what their acceleration is like.
He cant have been trying very hard. One of those big litre bikes will get to 150 in about 11 seconds.
I know the 997 is fast but its not that fast.

Exactly! There's no freakin' way that ANY 911 (even the Carrera GT) can keep up with a liter-class sport-bike. It would simply be blown away. Not even close, pal.

if you passed him it was because he let you or your driving was making him nervous. a gixxer 1000 will easily pull 180... my buddy can do 165 in 4th gear on his gsxr1000, that leaves 2 more gears to go!

just stating the facts boys, I don't know how hard he was trying but I do know he was trying, as far as me not riding, I do ride a cbr 900rr trust me I gave him plenty of room. I'm not trying to say that my 997 is faster then a gsxr 1000, all I 'm saying is what happened on the thruway on saturday night . I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence.

I also ride (CBR1100XX) and I know from personal experience that while riding at speeds over 100 mph, my confidence drops dramatically. So I'm guessing the Gixxer rider didn't go WOT.
On a bike, you are just SO much more vulnerable to loss of control due to road imperfections, crossing animals.....especially at night. I'm not saying you feel invincible in a car at those speeds, but at least there's a possibility of survival if you lose it, right?

Guys I also had similar experiences on 2 separate occasions last year.
And both times I out ran both bikes.
One was a 750 and the other was a 1000.
We were both at about 80mph on the highway when we met up and I took off leaving both behind.
I have to agree that I was not expecting to beat either of them, but he honestly could not only catch me, but barely gain any ground on me.

WINNING on the road means nothing. If anything it displays which person was the most rational. 145 in the dark, the best that could happen is a $6000 ticket, suspention for a year and a little "Hello Betty" jail time. As on another post a kid in a 90s Honda got a ticket in Portland for 142mph. If you want to go fast in a straight line try this:

BTW remember the honda 1 liter bike was clocked @ 202mph in Ohio? The machine will do it. The rider bails.
Its like a guy passes me on the freeway in his BMW Z3 and tells his friends that he beat a GT3. Not that I am not tempted, but the risk is not worth the reward. I would rather spend that money on real track time.

unless your car was hitting 180-190 and still pulling hard i just dont believe you were "beating" a sportbike with the throttle pinned.
BUT... like Roberga said... take it to the track. no reason to be go that fast on the street when there are so many drag-strips/road courses out there.

Bikes will do high speeds but they hit a wall at around 140. Ive known a bunch of crazy bike riders who ride at 160+ all the time. My friend also has a R1. He said once it gets to 140 or so it doesnt pull as hard and over 160 it really starts to crawl. This is with full throttle too. And the guy only weights 125lbs. haha yea hes pretty small.
