What does the "S" stand for?
Don't think of this as a stupid question, think of it as an opportunity to show how smart you are! Driving into work today, I wondered... "is it Sport? is it Super? Is it something else?"

If I were to guess, it would be Sport.
It is most likely derived from the 'RS' variants (past and present) which stood for "rennsport'

I would speculate that the "S" designation goes back to the days of the 356 when there were three engine options you could order, the Normal, 60 hp, the Super, which had 75 hp and the Super 90, which had 90 hp.
