997 met 997S
Felscher997s and myself gathered earlier this week and compared notes. We had the cars side by side and compared about every nut and bold and logo and sticker on the cars. Some people almost rubber necked their heads out of their body. After that we sat for 45 minutes in my car and 45 minutes in his car. Roof open and windows open as the weather was perfect (71 F, blue sky). Not realizing what the time was, one of us was called for duty, so we had to leave.Like to share some interesting observations (no, no opinions about S or non S, leather or no leather).
1. Does everybody know that you can split the screen with trip info on the right, temperature, time, date on the left and audio (radio or CD) info on the top right?
2. The car with the nav system has the date, the other not. Is that due to the GPS (time and date) up-date in case of the navigation system ?
3. Power supply for the phone. I have mine connected to the one sitting in the passenger area. There are two other ones, the cigarette lighter and one in the arm rest. I read somewhere that you should not use the cigarette lighter one for appliances. Any comments?
4. The sun roof is retracting with one push of a button, however, you can move/open the roof another say 2 inches when you push the button again after the roof stopped. Why is that? Is that to prevent the vibration noises at lower speeds?
We forgot to take some pictures and we admitted that we should make a few next time. There were more things of interest, but I have to go as the weather is too good right now (71 F. little breeze and blue sky).
Felscher997s, thanks for the quality time.
When navigation is active a pictogram will appear on the left half of the screen...
And on the right is all the other info.
Also when approaching an area when a turn is required a small pictogram will also appear under the tach...and if the map is being displayed you can automatically have it zoom in on the intersection.
Also in the GPS info section you can get an altitude readout...
A very cool system and more advanced than the previous system in my '02
The cigarette lighter outlet is the highest rated.....If you ever need to use the compressor be sure to use the cigarette lighter outlet!
Use of the other outlets for the compressor will blow your fuse and leave you stranded.
Take some time and
There's lots of info contained in them

OK, there we go:
Start the car.
Push "Main"
Push "Set"
Push "Main Display"
Push "Start Menu"
Push "Main", <enter>
Push "Main Display"
Push "Trip Computer" <enter>
Return
Now you will see the trip info on the left and general data on the right and audio info in the right top corner. This works with or without nav. In case you have a nav system, you can choose to have the left side for directions and not a trip summary.

PV & I did have a great meeting. It was just a beautiful day here in Houston. Now here is what I came away with from our meeting: PV knows his stuff about the 997 and he is a very nice person to explain all sorts of things to me that I could have learned from reading the manual. He knows the best areas of Houston for some all alone driving time. After seeing the Nav in his 997 I am thinking that I should have ordered this option. I will probably add it later. The Thicker Steering wheel for $800 is not worth the $$$. It should have been about a $200 option. It is not that much thicker, I was just thinking about those 8 Ben Franklins I pissed away. It was a great time, many folks were walking by us and checking the Pcars out. Anyway, I hope to get together again soon! Rennlist people are cool!!!
No thanks, I hope more people are sharing their learnings, such that others can benefit. Don't assume everybody knows.
That thing around the main screen is universal, you don't need a nav system for it.
