As someone who is on their second transmission, I can say that the resistance appears to be normal with the new transmission. Both the original and my new transmission have a very bulky feel on the 1-2 shift.

Charles - You're comments are exactly what I feel when I drive the car. I agree with you in that I feel it should be smoother and that there could be something else going on there. I think I'm gonna ask my service guys as well and see what they say. It should feel like the boxter you drove, smooth all the time.

I read this thread with great interest as shifting is an important part of the experience when driving.

When I got mine (997 manual), the first AND second gear were stiff. Standing still into first gear was OK, however, as soon as the car was rolling it took some force (everything is relative) to get it in first gear. Shifting to second gear also gave some resistence. From second to third went fine. Shifting down, from third to second was giving some resistence, and sometimes some force was needed. I was not able at that time to shift easily back to first gear while rolling. Maybe it was possible to shift down to first while rolling, but at that time I didn't want to force things too much.

Around 2000 miles the second gear became more smooth in up and down shift.

Currently, I have 3800 miles on the car and while reading the threads I looked a little more close on how I experienced the shifting during the last couple days:
+ standing still to first gear is smooth
+ from first to second is smooth too
+ shifting down from third to second is smooth
+ I can even shift to the first gear at speeds up to 30 MPH. I didn't try at higher speeds yet, but have the feeling that it will be OK even at 40 MPH. I will try later this week.

Thanks.

for some reason installing the short shifter made a big difference for me, everything seems to be much smoother, with more of a precise feeling to each shift.

I concur with Jerseybean's result with the Porsche Sport Shifter. It is a wondeful improvement.

What did the sport shifter cost you all to buy and get it installed?

I paid US$560 for the Porsche Short Shifter P/N 997-424-983-00 from Sunset Imports www.sunsetimports.com and my dealer charged my US$172.50 to install it.

Talk to your dealer, maybe they can make minor adjustments.

The tranny is a Japanese unit, that may be why you experienced Porsche guys "feel"
a difference.

I know this is a VERY old thread. But i think I am experiencing this very problem with my car.

Any updates from these guys these days?

my 3rd to 2nd gear issue does sound like it is always an issue with this car. Will a sport shifter really improve the feel?

A SHORT (not SPORT) shifter will change the feel a bit.

Dan,

Where can I get my hands on a short shifter?
