Default Shifting

Anyone notice any resistance going from 1st to 2nd. I know when it's cold the gears are a little tight but even after it warms up I seem to feel it. Going into any other gear is smooth as butter. It comes out of 1st fine, then there is a "bump", for lack of a better term, then it goes into second. It never grinds or kicks out, just doesn't go in as smooth. I've tried shifting at different RPM's just as a test, but don't really notice much difference.
Maybe this is normal, as it's my first Pcar, I'm not sure.

Yes, I notice the same thing and having driven many previous p-cars, it doesn't seem "quite right".

FWIW, no resistance into any gear on my Dec. 04 build with 1,300 miles.

Yes, but only when mine is cold. Once up to temp it seems smooth.

The Porsche Sport Shifter makes all the shifts much more positively than the standard shifter. The difference is very noticeable. I also had hard shifts from 1st to 2nd with standard shifter, especially when engine oil was not yet up to operating temperature.

I recommend the Porsche Sport Shifter.

So I guess it's just "normal". I need to run over to the dealer anyway to pick up a part soon, maybe I'll ask and see what they say. This is not the first manual I've ever had but it's the first one that does this. I'd like it a lot better if it didn't do this. I'm trying to get the wife to "like" driving a stick and this is not helping If I can't convince her all our other cars might end up auto and I'm not sure I can handle that.
Maybe I should look into the sport shifter as an option, problem with that is I'm really trying to move out to Colorado and I understand the cold causes the sport shifter some problems.

I notice from 2nd to 1st the shift is not smooth and sometimes hard when cold. Any one have that problem? Cold is in Florida.

I see that as well. I have to be at a complete stop before it likes to go into first, especially when it's cold.

yeah i hate it when u are coming to a rolling stop and want first gear but its hard getting it in. in 2nd it lugs a bit, which i understand is not good for the tranny/engine.

When the car is rolling, put the gear in neutral and with the clutch engaged, rev the engine a bit and depress the clutch and put it in first. It should go right in. For faster roll speed, you rev the engine higher. This is pretty easy and fun to do and with some practice you can put it in 1st gear even when cold and rolling at a decent speed.

I have a hard time putting the shifter in neutral when I turn off the car, cause it means the end of my drive.

I have the short shifter and its pretty notchy right now, I'm sure it'll loosen up with more miles.

If you can't get the tranny into first gear while rolling, you have a problem and I would insist that Porsche fix it, whether it is common on all 997's or not. You should be able to downshift into 1st gear anytime you want.

I think resistance going into first gear when car is rolling is a common trait with most manual transmissions.

Absolutely not, unless you are driving an old VW bug. I regularly downshift to first going 30 MPH or faster, not only in my Porsche's, but in every car I have ever had. Once the car warms up, it should be only slightly more difficult to shift from 2nd to 1st than it is 3rd to 2nd.

Maybe I'm just more sensitive to the resistance as it's my first Porsche and I've only had it a couple of months. I don't want to "force" it into gear. The sound of gears grinding is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I do blip the throttle when I go into 1st from second and that does make it easier, which I should have to do from higher speeds, but not 1 or 2 mph. My initial question, going from 1st to 2nd was the one I was more concerned about anyway.
