The 997 S is repaired and home safe.
It even got a warm bath to verify the problem was solved before leaving the dealership, no more System Fault Return To Workshop.
They also did a 4 wheel alignment, it is much better driving down the highway.
I do have one other issue that will have to be addressed this weekend.
I have a pretty serious vibration in my steering wheel at 70 mph.
I didnt notice it during my trip to the dealer because they instructed me to keep it at 55 mph or less on the trip in.
I am guessing the front wheels need to be rebalanced? Any one else have to have their tires rebalanced? The car has 325 miles on it now.

O'Daniels Porsche did the repair and I am very happy with their work and even more impressed with their attitude towards taking care of my concerns.
The service manager asked me to thank the Rennlist members who contributed all the information regarding the car wash syndrome.

Thanks guys!!!

Didn't see what mileage you have, but with properly aligned car after mis-alignment, you may be feeling the cupping on the tires. Run your hand over the edges, inside and out, to see if you feel variations. If you do, seems that Porsche should by you some new shoes.

997S, 1/25/05 production. Just washed the car today, opened the front trunk to dry around the edges, started the car and have the System Fault message. Interestingly, I drove the car, it seems fine, and found that several times when I come to a stop, the message went away. Upon accelerating up to speed again, the message reappears.

To the dealer tomorrow and thanx for all of the info in this thread!!

997C2S, my System fault message was constant. It was always on, but I could hide it to check the oil level by using the lever on the lower left hand side of the steering column. (operating lever for on-board computer, item 15 in the cockpit quick reference guide) It would come back on after restarting the car or by going into the INFO section of the center display.
The parts that were replaced on my car were:
996-624-119-01 actuator, 997-511-053-00 lower lock & 997-511-117-00 actuator. These parts are on restriction. My dealer had to send a download of the trouble codes to Atlanta for evaluation before they were authorized to order the replacement parts.
Refer your dealer to this thread if they have not encountered this problem before, I promise you that it will be of great help to them.
Good Luck, it is a simple fix now that the problem parts have been identified.

Unhappy Return to Workshop too!

My Turn I guess. I have had my 997S for two weeks, Feb 05 build. 300 miles on it I drove out today to an Easter thing about 24miles from my crib. After it sat for about 7 hours I got in to go home and drove out of the driveway when I heard a beep and then the "Check engine return to workshop" light came on. What a drag...I did not even wash it today either. Oh well, I am not surprised, it's off to the workshop on Monday armed with really great info from Rennlist and what really sucks is that the weather is gonna be great for the next couple of days.

Wow, Paul, bad luck.

To be honest, I'm waiting for that warning signal too with all that rain lately. The idea of that is no good. Maybe I should bring it in right now, before the warning pops up.

Good Luck.

PV- You are most likely in the clear as this problem seems to pop up really soon after the 997 gets delivered. Let's get together again soon, when is the next Pcar meeting on 45?

So when this happens does it say "System fault return to workshop"? or" Check engine return to workshop"? Just wondering! cause mine said the latter, so maybe my problem is something else entirely.

Paul,
Yours is a different message...I think yours may be an emissions related message

Paul,
I used to have a Ferrari 360 and they had a similar check engine message which was related to the O2 (oxygen sensor) in the exhaust.....What this did was monitor emmissions and send info back to the engine management system to adjust fuel mix.
