Default oil change in first 2000 miles

I know this is being beat to death, but I just wanted to see a poll on how many people are going to change their oil in after break-in...

I changed oil/filter at 3000miles. These engines have such tight tolerances that there shouldn't be alot of metal shavings, but I just think that fresh synthetic oil should be installed within the first few thousand miles.

Why would ANYONE ever go to the Porsche dealer for an oil change? That would be a better question.

Good question. Lets assume you don't like to do it yourself for all kind of good reasons. What is a good place (chain of places) to go, besides the dealer?

To be honest, I'm not to keen on saving money for an oil change. I'm more into the quality of what they do: correct brand, correct oil quality, correct volume (don't over or underfill), change of filter and brand, and don't forget the gasket or whatever the name is when they screw the plug back in place.

For a total of $80, but the filter from Porsche, get the oil from Walmart or other retailer and go to Jiffy Lube or other oil change place. Give them $20 and your done.

What's a matter? Porsche on a budget?

Yes I go to the dealer and yes I pay the excessive bill too. The thing is under warrenty and that's why I bring it to them. They can find stuff that is going wrong.

Assuming your Porsche service is at a top-notch Porsche dealership.

Who buys a Porsche and then expects to get by on-the-cheap anyway?

I think it best to find an independant guy to save some $$ if you don't want to go to the dealer. The idea of some tatted kid at Jiffy Lube doing it isn't too appealing.

I just rather do it somewhere else not because its cheaper but its more convenient than going to dealer...dropping it off...waiting or coming back....

It's not only the money, but also allowing a Porsche Mechanic to touch my car.
Not going to happen without my supervision. I would rather throw the $100 bill out the window on the way by the dealer.

Personally I'd rather do it myself as its so easy to get to on a 911 and I already have a torque wrench + filter socket to make sure the engine's drain bolt and filter assembly are tightned according to the specifications. Changed mine at 1600 miles (break in oil change) and will do it every 6000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. Overkill? Maybe so, but I feel better about doing it this way. If you do change your own oil NEVER overfill the tank. I like to keep mine at the 1/2way mark and add only when the gauge is down to the last 1/4 bar. FYI, my 997S burned a bit of oil (1/2 quart) during first 750 miles and with 3000 miles currently on the car the oil level pretty much stays the same.

Bad dealers you guys have. I guess in the Bay Area P-dealers have good mechanics I can trust. OTOH, I would never take a P-car to Jiffy Lube as you recommend. You are concerned about a dealer mechanic and comfortable w/ a Jiffy Lube mechanic ?!

And yes... I would change oil after the break-in, even if PAG says it is not needed.
