Dealerspeak...
A few years back when the first Corvette C5 came out, I was willing to pay MSRP for the car. It was the 1997 model, totally different than the previous years C4 with 1/3 fewer parts. As I walked up to the car which was one of the first to hit the showroom floor the sticker (MSRP) was $42,000.00 on the side passenger window and this salesman promised me that "it was no problem selling you the car for sticker price as you are one of our best customers" (I bought many P/U trucks for my painting company in the past from this particular dealership). As I walked up to the car I notice a mark-up of $30,000.00! on the front windshield over MSRP! He tells me that I would have no problem selling this car after a few years of ownership for close to this price because this is what the market commands for this car (now $72,000.00)! I turned around and left without saying a word and found a dealership selling at sticker. I went through the same dealer mark-ups BS with the BMW 2002 M3 and refused to pay it. Porsches aren't cheap but one thing for sure, the company does not tolerate dealer "mark-ups". I always get a kick when a salesman acts like dealer mark-ups are the norm for cars in high demand. In the long run they loose customers. IMHO.
A few years ago, I walked into a Cadillac dealership to test-drive the (then new) CTS. The salesman told me that would be impossible because the only model they had was already sold. I said "Fine. When are getting some new ones in?" He said he really did not know and that anyways luxury car buyers of Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, etc. always ordered they car direct from the factory and never requested to test drive them beforehand. I walked away...
951Porsche, I had a similar situation when I was looking to buy my 997. I was uncertain whether I would get a 996 C4S or order the 997. One of the local dealers(not the one I ordered my 997 from) would not let me drive the 996 that was on his lot because he had to be careful who he let drive the car. He knew I had once owned a Boxster so he said "no big deal, it's basically the same car"
I'm enjoying this one.
Years ago I walked into the dealer and they had two version of the model I was looking of rand I asked the owner of the dealer fo the differences: he looked very serious at both cars and said with all honesty that the right one was black and the left one green. I was stuned with his in depth knowledge......
ps: the left one was a standard version while the right one had chip tuning, Eibach suspension, large ally wheels, turbo, airco, etc etc

Good Lord...what an idiot...you should have said:
"well if it's basically the same car, sell it to me for the price of a boxter."
I considered a 986 in 2000 and dealer only had home made photos of the car. No car to look at and no brochure to read. I was like "is this how Porsches are sold?" I could get more info from reading a mag.
Went back to the same dealer when picking up a 996 a few years later. They've since renovated and the same sales guy had books and cars to show this time.

This wasn't even a Porsche (!) I once tried to test drive a used Acura Integra GS-R(from a Toyota dealer) but the sales manager told me they wanted to keep the miles off the car. I said "oh ok, guess I brought this down payment check for nothing" and walked out, with the sales manager and salesman chasing after me asking if I wanted to drive it.
