997s vs c6 vette
The latest rumor is that Porsche will price the 3.4L Boxster coupe above the 3.2L Boxster S. Also, they say that a lightweight "Club Sport" version is on the way.

How on earth can an automotive enthusiast (I'm being nice) compare a 9XX to a Vette?
They could be from two different planets. If we keep this up, Porsche is going to do the 928 thing again...

I'm not beating us up. I have a Boxster and a Z06 and a 993TT. The Porsches are always a joy to drive. And then, sometimes I like to get down on the floor and roll in the dirt Z06 style. Kind of like Tonka trucks when we were kids...
Way to go Tour for having an outstanding combination of cars. I've never understood the make of car as a religion kind of sentiment which seems especially severe with Porsche and Viper owners.
I honestly can not understand anyone but a Porsche fanboy dismissing the new C6 Z06 as 'just a Corvette'...
FWIW, most Corvette owners think Porsches are great cars, including myself. I have truly enjoyed my drives in various 911s over the years and I am always watching the pricing of 993TTs and GT3s as those are my two personal favorites.

The 2006 Corvette Z06 is not "just another Corvette."

All kidding aside, the C5 and C6 Vettes are awesome machines, but they handles differently than a 911. I'm not saying it handles better or worse, but it is different. I prefer the way my 997 feels on the road over the way the C6. I spent a considerable amount of seat time in the C6 and I grinned when I floored it, but after that it lost some of its luster.
You don't hear me say that the Corvette and/or the ZO6 are bad cars. No, not at all. They are great cars in their segment. I have great discussions with people driving Mustangs, Corvettes, etc and I like to keep it that way. I'm still rubbernecking when I see a Corvette passing by. That doesn't take away that they changed the front to much and in my opinion didn't do a lot with the interior.
The discussion we entered last week was about what do your compare with what: in a magazine a few years ago they compared the M3 (4 seats) with a Corvette (2 seats). Great story and a lot of testing and so on and at the end of the day, they said that the winner of the test was the M3 as it has 4 seats...........
I see the same trend with the current Porsche stories: great car, best handling, good balance, super suspension, however, we declare it to loose as the price tag is not what we are looking for............ That degrades both cars at the same time.
Is there already a test between the M3 with performance package and a 997??

For the last 5 years my non-mechanic neighbor has watched from across the street as at least once I week I'd put my Lingenfelter C5 up on Rhino Ramps and pay her back for all the good things she could do. Whether just checking the gaskets and torque on the header collectors or changing brake pads and bleeding in fresh DOT4, I'd be keeping her sharp and my neighbor would be shaking his head.
When I brought home the 997 S my neighbor was SHOCKED. "I can't believe you sold your Vette", he said. As I was already crawling under the 997 S to admire the Porsche's suspension. "How does that Porsche compare to the Vette?", he asked.
Because I loved that Vette, I loved her for toasting the SL55 AMG out on I-80 in Davis and for repeatedly hammering that 750 il with Dinan on the trunk lid back on I-280 north of Crystal Springs, because I knew her I couldn't tell him the truth... the truth that she didn't compare.
So I grinned back at him and answered, "All watches tell time".
If the car mag writers had loved their Vettes that's what they'd have written.
Johnny,
I know how you feel. Having been driving around in the C5 for a while. Everybody, I mean everybody, tells me how great the Porsche is, but why sell the Corvette? Was the Corvette not good enough?
Yesterday, I had a great guy talking to me. Really, he is a great guy and likes his motorbikes and cars. While talking two of kids disappeared into the car and he started to lean forward and saw them comfortable sitting (don't catch me on the word comfortable please....) and he understood a lot by looking at that situation.
Again, Corvettes are great cars too.

Man, I can't believe this post. Seems like a lot of Porsche owners are threatened by the Corvette. Relax. By objective standards of performance measured by a few recent magazine articles it looks as though the new C6 will out perform the 997S on the track by 1-2 seconds per lap. By all accounts subjectively the 997 feels better. The 997 is not a better performing car, at least if the track is the discriminator. Lets face it. Anyone that owns a new 997 could have purchased a vette, or even the upcoming C6 Z06 for that matter. They did not. For whatever reason. Enough said. But by the same token anyone that owns a 997 shouldn't look down there nose at the Vette from a performance standpoint. You do and you could be very embarassed. Look at the SCCA AutoX championships the past couple of years. You want the fast ticket in Solo you better have a C5 Z06. Look what's been winning the ALMS series the past few years as well. These are serious cars worthy of at least a certain level of respect. I had an 01 and an 03 Z06. Tracked them, AutoXed them and ran the you know what out of them. Not a single problem. Some of the most trouble free cars I ever owned. But guess what. I want a 997S now. It's a rolling work of art, and yes it does feel more connected to the road. It is not faster however than my previous Z's. In any event the obvious disdain some evidence for the Vette (looks, aura aside) is unwarranted and perhaps more telling of deeper personal concerns. Peace out!
Maybe a little off topic, but
I read the starter of this post complaining about the fuzziness and slow "feel" to the C6's steering.
I am curious as to why it is that way.
It's funny that I too remember the fuzziness of the C3, and C4's steering. Over the summer a friend
of mine let me drive his C5 and I was truly amazed to find that same "fuzziness" in the C5. Coming from my GT3 to that C5 just felt ugly.
What is it about the steering in these Corvettes that seem to be as much a part of its DNA as the shape of the 911 is a part of the 997's DNA?

Interestingly, the boys over on the Corvetteforum page are having a similar discussion with changes. C6 verses the new Boxster S. Apparently Porsche marketing has targeted those that bought their Vettes new with mailers touting the 987 S.
It is a great time to be a car nut, with the C7S and V8 M3 coming and used 996TT's hitting the market.
