I posted the same request a few months ago. It's not a NHTSA issue (if it was, every other 2005 would have the "endless seatbelt chime") or a response to a "lawsuit." I suspect someone at Porsche thought it was a good idea. (Probably the same engineer that came up with "I-Drive" over at BMW and was ultimately fired).

I agree that it is a small point, but annoying, and it's not that we don't wear our seatbelts religously. For instance, I take my belt off because have to take my wallet out (with a magnetic card in it) to get into our office building parking lot. So for the next three levels the chime is going like crazy unless I put the belt back on. It gets a lot louder the faster you go, just for good measure. At 60 mph, its like 85 db, so never take your belt off if you have to dig your cell phone out of your pocket.

I asked my service guy and he said he knew of no way to disconnect it without possibly affecting another system. I also checked all the fuses to see if there was a dedicated seat belt warning chime fuse. No joy there.

So until there is enough clamor from the 997 rabble so that someone who knows what they are doing actually comes up with a fix, I've decided to consider it one of those 911 quirks, like horrific oversteer, that we all were afraid had been engineered out of the car. See, good news after all!

It would be nice if you could just change the chime. Too bad PCM isn't that advanced, lol. But, who knows, maybe the next version of iDrive will have sound changing features, like PCs.

I recall seeing a post from someone not long ago saying they gave one of the mechanics at their Porsche dealer a few dollars and he managed to disconnect the warning system. Alernatively, if you're just running errands and the like, engage the seatbelt before you get in the seat; it won't affect your comfort and you won't hear the chime.

Has anyone done this on a 997 yet? This sounds like the best route to alleviating this nuisance.
