I think the Bose is definitely worth it. Alot of acoustical engineering delsign went into the system--it would be hard to replicate this in the aftermarket--do it if tunes are important to you. If on the other hand, you barely turn on the radio/CD when you're driving--then skip it.

I've driven 997's with and without Bose and was disappointed by the amount of improvement that it brings.
It is better, but not £900 better (I don't know the US price of this option, no doubt a lot less).
The problem is that if you decide you would like to improve the stereo in the future there is no financially realistic way of doing that, so make sure your happy with whatever you choose.

If you enjoy your tunes it's worth it. I do disagree with the above post about being hard to replicate in aftermarket. Almost all aftermarket systems blow away stock systems but if you don't want to pay for the install or having someone tear apart your new car go with the Bose.

Haven't heard the systems back to back, but I opted for the standard system in my car due to bugetary constraints. I think it sounds great - better than the HK system in our BMW and almost as good as the Bose system in our E500 (the fact that it's a wagon with a bigger interior and more sound insulation probably accounts for most of the difference). Of course, my 50 year old ears probably don't work as well as they once did.

you must be kidding
I currently drive a 997 without Bose (I didn't spec it, I would instinctively choose the best available system if I had). I wasn't looking forward to moving from Boxster with Bose to the 997 with PSP, but I was pleasently suprised.
Don't get me wrong the Bose system is better than PSP, but it isn't the massive improvement that Bose was over PSP in the old Boxster.
Of course High Fidelity sound reproduction is highly subjective and the only advice to be taken is that offered from your own ears.
Having said this, I have ordered Bose for my 997S Cab.

IMHO the standard multi-speaker stereo in the 911 is good enough. After all... this is a sports car isn't it? Are we going to load it further with heavier amps, subs, etc.?

Some people are satisfied with a $150. JVC boom box or $200. micro stereo sytem with 3" speakers for their stereo needs.
Others need state of the art, high definition audio system with seperate components, red label CD/SACD or vinyl source components, large full range speakers, and tweaked room acousic tube traps to make them happy.
Yes, the Bose audio system is functionally and sonically superior to the base Porsche radio system. It's designed to be offer much better sound quality. The price is actually quite reasonable for the technology and sound improvements.
Is it worth it? Only by listening yourself side by side in the dealership can one make that personal value judgement. Bring along 1 or 2 of your favorite CD's and it will help you hear the differences.
The Bose audio option definitely improves resale value, as well.
