Automobile mentioned S in M5 writeup
They stated:
"The M5 could spell bad news for your driving license, but it's guaranteed to brighten up the dullest day. Just about the only car that can rival it in terms of speed from A to B, smiles per miles, and everyday usability is the latest 911 Carerra S. The Porsche cost roughly the same, and it may rank higher in street cred, but the BMW offers five seats, a family size trunk, and a less challenging attitude when pushed. This car is a sensible antidepressant, and it doesn't even need a prescription-just a healthy bank balance."
Interesting that they singled out the 997 in the context of the M5 review. Of course, these two cars are not in the same category. I'm practically a lifelong bmw geek; I own an M3, have been driving BMWs for 10 years, and I have been to the BMW Performance Center to drive M5s on their little test track. The M5, at OVER 4,000lbs, will never be a sports car, the brakes continue to be undersized for any sort of track work, and it will run through tires like crazy on the race track if you do attempt some hot lapping. Too bad it's only offered in SMG, which I hate (tried to warm up to SMG in the M3, but it removes the driver from the equation to a large extent). Also noteworthy is that it has less tq than the outgoing model and weighs the same.
Early reports in CAR mag are quoting 8 flat around the ring, roughly equivalent to the 997S. Pretty amazing for a two ton beast, but sports car it is not.
Just food for thought for people who continually mention the M5 in the same breath as the 911, typically those focused purely on hp and insist pimply-faced adoloescent internet bench racing.

too bad the M5 looks like ***.
The interesting comparison will be between the M6 and the 911S.
Its highly unlikely the M6 will weigh less than 3800lbs - so despite the 145HP advantage( ) My choice would still be the 997S.
I heard some talk about bmw considering a real sportscar to challenge the 911.
its tuff to be in everybody's crosshairs.

Just test drove the Carrera S two days ago. Came out very impressed about the performance and handling and interior finishing.
Had deposit on E60M5 over a year and will definitely get it over the Carrera S at any day!
All the previous talks about the Carrera S being a lighter car, a true sport car and will perform much better on the track are valid. But in real life situation, not everyone will go to the track, most people who has families will need the space of the M5, and yet can provide them with good rewarding driving experiences.

Hahaha... I must be the only guy that likes the look of the new M5, the ultimate family highway missle. The V10 will no doubt be intoxicating to drive. Some great deals on some 02 M5's right now on the Cdn mkt.
