Perhaps the Z guy should buy a GT-3 if he wants a little power oversteer.

Hmmm... 14 posts. Maybe before he spends that hundie he should just lurk a while. He'll get plenty of "*constructive* information regarding this VERY important purchase"

(I wonder how much *constructive* information he got before he got the Z?)

I'd like to see a Z with 7k in mods clean a 997's clock on the track. I'm very skeptical on that one.

I was initially rather sceptical regarding the 996TT because of the AWD, but if it's oversteer you want the TT is a fantastic car for getting sideways and keeping it that way, much easier for large powerslides than my previous 360M, go drive one but make sure you switch off the PSM

I think he was talking about straight line speed; most likely some sort of fast and furious bolt-on schit, a quadruple bypass NAWS setup or a nut busting hairdryer kit.

no need to get ruffled...or frayed.

I'm just trying to make the most educated decision.Yeah, I have 100K to spend on a car, but unlike you, my money is VERY dear to me.

I dont know a whole lot about porsches. I'm looking for *constructive* information regarding this VERY important purchase.

Docjackson and mrbonus, thanks for the helpful info. The C6 vette was on my list, but the C6 interior IMO is inferior to my Z.
My ruffles aren't feathered.

I don't know what makes you think that I, or anyone reading this thread, have 100k to throw away. That's plainly silly (my daughter's favorite word) and presumptious. But, if the cash it *that* dear to *you* perhaps you ought to *invest* it, using only 7k of it to make a 997 *killer*. This purchase appears Very important to you, and should not be taken *lightly*. I would sit on the *sidelines* for a spell and read magazines.

I guess the thing that turns me ON about the 997 is also what turns me OFF. i.e the "everyday supercar" nature of the porsche. Most certifiable exotics make poor daily drivers. Sadly, the turbo isnt an option ( i think) as I have a disdain for AWD sports cars. I guess I'm a hooligan that enjoys power oversteer.

What type of driveshaft losses do 911s usually have...15%-18% I'd imagine that with such a short drivetrain, a 911 would have higher RWHP than a comparable car with a FR layout. Is this the case? What sort of RWHP do 911 usually show?
The Carrera was dynoed by Evo and I seem to remember it putting down something in the range of 270 WHP.

I'll be dynoing the S on November 13th so I'll keep you updated.

For $100k, find yourself a GT3. If it's an all out sports car you want, you can't find a better deal.

You just about spilt the difference between the 3.4 and 3.6 which according to Evo have 249 and 295 HP at the wheels respectively (here's their dynos).

Because the cars are rear wheel drive with a rear engine the drivetrain losses are much less than 15-18%. Assuiming Posrche's figure of 320 BHP is correct and Evo's 295 HP at the wheels is also correct, then the drive train loss is more like 7%.

Nice dynos!

295 at the wheel....

7% losses...thats whutamtalkinabout.

Wait...but is the 295RWHP for the base 3.6 or the S 3.8??

The dyno of 270 (by evo) is more in line with 15% loss - 320HP at crank * .85 = 272.

Also, how the hell do you strap a blower onto the boxer?

996TT is an oversteering hooligans dream? I would *never* have imagined that. Like I said, I know zero about porsches, but i appreciate all the info.

The 997 probably didnt impress you as you expected because you were ON A TEST-DRIVE WITH A SALESPERSON.

You wanna be blown for all its worth, do the following:
1. Pack it full of stuff and be surprised it holds more than you thought...
2. Drive to a distant track for a weekend
3. Spend 2-3 days at the track totally amazed at its exceptional abilities in turns
4. Drive home from the track (wow...all on the same tires...)
5. Change your tires in preperation of a blizzard
6. Have a blast in the snow with proper tires and see how it acts just like the pavement was dry!
7. Take another 1000 mile road trip with a kid in the backseat too!

Do all this within a month or so and then find another car that will give you equal ability, equal enjoyment, and not a single complaint! Porsches may not be the fastest, but personally i think they are the most capable overall, and certainly they feel the best doing it!

The 3.6 dyno is from a 996 which should be similar to the 3.6 liter 997 (it may be a little different since the 3.6 liter 997 is supposed to have 325 instead of 320 BHP like the 3.6 liter 996).

Both dynos are from Evo. Check out their website: http://evoms.com/porsche%20ec%20art%20test.htm

the evo site is sweet!

okay, 270 rwhp from the 3.6.

Pretty good - damn.....7% loss would be nice (but impossible)

wow those guys seem to feel the big reds are simply "good".

They must have some high standards.

In general, do mods on a porsche if done by reputable tuners, decrease the cars value?

Ah yes S2, those are some very compelling attributes - except for the snow thing. Thats one thing i'm realizing is a great attribute of the p-cars - great real world/everyday supercars.

What is snow?

hehe

They're actually forecasting some rain this weekend - about time (last rain 3/5/04) Hopefully no fires this year.

HAHA, well where i live we know about snow! Actually, the people to my North im sure known even more! The greatest thing is seeing 911s casually drive by SUVs and other vehicles stuck in the snow! A rear engine is good for more than just oversteer! I know a few people that use these cars as daily drivers all year round.

Speaking of snow as well... is anyone familiar with Camp 4 ? Porsche's driving school set up in Finland? Its basically a just like their Porsche Driving Experience DE thing, except in the middle of nowhere in a place where the snow never melts!

295 at the wheels for a stock 996 3.6 is bull unless the thing is pretty heavily modified. The 996 3.6s dyno around 265-270 on a dynojet. The S dyno could be low because the engine is still tight.
