Default First 997 repli-kit: 993 or 996?

It of course is inevitable that the bolt-on industry will make a kit for older cars to looks like 997's.

The question is will 993's or 996's be the best starting point?

Really, I'm not in the market for, nor advocating this, but pondering an inevitability.

Thoughts?

If anything for a 996. They both are hump-backed...

Why would anyone make a 993 look like a 997 ?. I could understand transforming the ugly 996 to a "better looking" 997.

996 and 997 are identical wheelbase and many other proportions - 993 is alot shorter with different proportions. It would have to be based on a 996...

It is amazing to me, how many people actually think that 996 is ugly compare to 993 and older 911 models. I personally think that the 02+ headlights on the 996, which diffreciate the 996 from the boxster, the teardrop headlights on the 996 looks much more beautiful than any 911 even came out, including the 993, and the 997 round headlights looks almost identical the VW beetle...

just my 2 cents...

And yes, I love Porsche's in general, but 997 seems going backwards from the frontal looks.

The 996 and 997 share the same roof (Porsche says the rest of the 997 is new stuff).

Youngster,
don't you own an "ugly" 996?

Netdoc,
Couldn't agree with you more....996 is the best looking version a modern pcar could be...997 is a step backward for sure in looks...the front end is bad on the 997....I'm sure it will be a great machine...

My wife, who i showed pics of 996 and 997 side by side, said that the new one looks like a vw bug!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They all have their place in history and they all are great cars - RMS leak....

Anyone who says one is ugly is only showing their ignorance to us all!!!

I'll reserve judgment on the 997 until I see one in person. some of the close-up pictures I have seen on the car taken by amateurs look significantly better than the Porsche published photos.

Robert,

The only thing that I don't like about the GT3 is how ugly it looks on the outside (eventhough it is much nicer looking than the regular 996). I bought the car for what is under the skin.

Yougster, thats very honest of you....Sadly enough, most people buy pcars for whats on the outside only....You sound like you know and appreciate what cars are made to do...perform!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some day I hope to upgrade to a GT3.........

Enjoy it!

It's a stretch to call a 996 ugly. You can call a Pontiac Aztek ugly, or a Fiat Multipla--but a 996? It's really a great looking, bold modern interpretation of Porsche's past. Different perhaps, but not ugly (IMHO).

You know the old saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". While certainly not considering the 996 "ugly", I just prefer the looks of the 993 (just like for some others, it will be the other way around..). Personal preferences, and I certainly do not want to convince anybody. Anyway all Porsche are beautiful... (some of us just consider certain models more beautiful than others...)

we should start seeing some 996 to 997 conversions soon after the 997 is released (basically once the parts become advailable through the dealers. the rear fendrers will be the biggest pain since you will have to cut off the 996 fenders and reweld on the 997 parts. Yes all the other stuff is different but it should bolt on for the most part since the basic shell is the same (i.e. all the hard points). the rest of it will be more of an intigration exercise than anything else.
The real question is why this will happen with 996 values dropping and the normal drop in value for modified cars.
my 2 cents

Cupcar#12 I think its going to happen Because of the drop in 996 values.
There are many people out there that run the economics vs. emotion equation and feel that buying a 'cheap' 996 + cost of mods to make it look like a 997 ='s getting a 997 "on the cheap" if you will.

Look what happened with slantnose conversions, late 80 to C2 kits, everything to a Turbo version, etc.

i agree. it's just Bling at that point IMHO.

Above i meant the rear fenders will have to be cut - the fronts will probably bolt on.
