I'm holding out for the 997S to 996 conversion kit.

I do not get it Donney... weren't you looking for light covers to make them look like round headlights instead?

Headlight Molding

So now Porsche puts out a car with round (ok, oval) headlights and people complain... To each their own... I like the looks of the new car and to me I do not see it looking like a VW

Really, I'm not in the market for, nor advocating this, but pondering an inevitability.

Thoughts?
I think the best starting point would be the 996 because of the similar size including wheelbase. The pre-996's were shorter and smaller in every dimension so I think they would look kind of funny. Kind of like a 348 kit on a Fiero.

However, I don't think this will stop many from updating older 911's to look like the 997.

MS-Shaw can set u up with with a 911 to 996 conversion and then you can convert that into a 997 - - humm let's see you can go from 1965 to 2005 in 40 thousand easy steps

"996 GT-2000;
Convert your 911 to 996 GT-3R race car; Kit includes Roof, Doors, Hood, Front bumper, Fenders, Rocker Panels, Rear quarter panels and Wing; Adaptor kit for converting the body is included; Requires a full Nascar style cage.
Price is only $6900.00 "
http://www.mashaw.com/html/product_info.html

the 996 would make the logical starting point for a conversion since the hard points (where the fenders and other major componets bolt on) are the same basically. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of differences but i bet you could back date a 997 to a 996 interior and so forth. Time will tell

Twas only a joke I'm sure the new headlights will look very good. Remember it's the interior that you spend your time in.

I personally prefer what my friend is doing: Using a 1st generation body (with NO racy aero kits) and stuffing a 993 engine, drivetrain, suspension with latest generation engine management (motec like).....and deleting anything that weighs something and does nothing. I'm sure it's going to cause some 964, 993, 996, 997 and even GT3 owners to go to their OPC to complain that there's something wrong with their car ....all the world know is that he is doing a classic car restoration project

Praising the looks of a 996 would be to say, she/he has a nice personality. Mechanically, well, that's another story. Advanced tehcnology, etc. But, 996 nor any other street Porsche, today, is hand made. Not since 1998. That makes a big difference. That said, the 997 is a sharp looking car both inside and out. The round headlights look very good, classic Porsche and modern at the same time. Need I remind anyone that there was never, ever, any car made that looked like a classic 911. RUF excluded. Has anyone questioned whether the car coming up behind them was a 996, Boxster or a Mitsubishi? Of course, we all do regularly. The 997 makes me think "new car" again. I saw one, owned by PCNA, and I like it very much. Many of you will, no doubt, agree this is a car that has something for both camps. Nobody will be unhappy with it's 355hp!!!

Default Evolution

The 997 is what the 996 should have been all along. The true evolution of the prettiest 911 made until now - the 993. No? Then read the old Porsche literature. Porsche is about EVOLUTION, not revolution.

The 997/911 front end no longer looks like a Dodge Caravan, the goofy "bags under the eyes" headlamps are banished back to the Boxster, and the beyond weird 2002 lamps are just plain banished, the door handles no longer look like they were stolen from a Camry, the Dr. Suess designed dashboard has been replaced with one befitting a 911, the organic fender curves are back with the flares, the car's butt is still kinda big... but it looks much better, on and on.

Know why ALL of this happened? Because us long timers did not like the 996. End of story. And anyone who criticizes another for expressing a personal opiinion on beaty as ignorant - is themselves the ignorant one... If you like 996's, there's good news. The prices have been and will continue to be low for a long time, and for a good reason. They are and always will be FUGLY.

Like it or not, the 996 headlight design evolved from the 1998 GT1 that won LeMans.

That was mutated, not evolved. Guess what? They're gone now...

BTW, read the recent Pano or Excellence interviews. The headlamps were done on the cheap, to save money as Porsche was in financial trouble. The current designs are what they wanted to do to begin with...
