Default Avoid Morimoto HID

Half vent/half sharing feedback/review of my Morimoto HIDs. Short version, wildly unhappy, the stock headlights are far superior in every way except candela output, and that isn't a deal breaker in this instance. Going with bullets for ease.
- Installation is no different from factory headlights, except for the additional wiring to enable the Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) The wiring however could not be routed as described in the instructions and I had to run them through the aiming adjustment pass throughs.
- You can definitely tell they aren't made in Germany, but not so bad I would say they are made in China.
- Programming the DRLs wasn't difficult, but the headlights immediately generated multiple warnings. (which they mention on a secondary website page, not the primary page, which I felt was disingenuous) Apparently you can use a PIWIS to code it out, which I both don't believe and would be uncomfortable with anyhow. Driving with a flashing light on the dashboard is distracting and prevents me from actually knowing if the brights are on or not (yes, I can the difference if it's dark out).
- The headlight adjustment on one side didn't go as high as I needed and have spent weeks arguing with the company. They basically ignore my points, talk in circles to shirk responsibility and patronize me while claiming they are trying to help resolve my issue. They absolutely don't care about customer satisfaction.
- The headlight output is incredibly sloppy, as shown in the picture. The cutoff is harsh and not parallel, the steps don't align, and the right headlight puts a dark spot right in the middle of the road.
- Pointless gripe, but there is no way to disable the DRLs without opening the frunk.
- Finally, pretty sure they deleted my original review off the website.

Overall, I would say give this company a wide berth, there are options to repair stock headlights (rennlights) and any issues you may run into will be met with scorn. Certainly not worth the $1800 retail (plus tax).

I haven’t tried their headlights but after trying their tail lights which I still do like due to the look, it’s clear they are not of the highest quality as they don’t have a very good rubber seal around the lamps as the OEMs do, and also the plastic tab bracket that slides into the holder/retainer is made too thin and eventually broke on one side so I had to ask for a replacement set. They agreed but claimed user installation error. They were fine for a few weeks and then one day I noticed the tail light hanging out loose at the forward tab.

To me, the headlamps are not worth the effort as I couldn’t care less about the 4 little DRL dots, and the standard Xenons work perfectly fine at night. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm glad I saw this. Nearly pulled the trigger on a set during black Friday. I think I'll stick with OEM and maybe some fresh bulbs in the spring.

Was considering it, now I won't. Will still to OEM, just try to polish, find a way to increase the output (still looking for the right bulb for that)

Well crap. I have a pair sitting in my garage awaiting a free minute for installation. I’ll follow up if I have a better experience.

Read this. I will probably try it after I finish cleaning up the paint, which is after I finish the honey-do list.

So in conclusion.. you're saying that these headlights are not worth 1800 bucks?
Is there anything similar out there in the market better priced?

Before we go into total Morimoto bashing here's my experience (and it's a mixed bag)
PROs:
  • I very much like the light pattern of the Morimotos and think the light is vastly superior to the OEM lights
  • I had no error messages, I believe they happen when your car has PDLS
  • Very easy installation, and I found a better way to hook up the DRL. Morimoto has now adopted the instructions that I posted on RL into their installation instructions
CONs:
  • I also had problems adjusting the light height on the passenger side and ultimately broke the adjuster. Morimoto then sent me a replacement.
  • Everything then was fine for 2 years until recently the right lamp started flickering and I got a "check dipped beam" error message, re-seating seems to have fixed the problem for now, fingers crossed
  • Their customer support is not very impressive

I recently did the Morimoto headlight assemblies and I can’t speak highly enough. Are you referring to replacement HID bulbs or the replacement LED assemblies? There’s a vast difference. I didn’t realize how poor my original HID’s were at night until I put the Morimoto LED assemblies in. I have done Morimoto HID replacement bulbs in other vehicles and have been pleased but the difference in their HID bulbs to a standard HID bulb is much smaller. If you already have a set of the Morimoto LED lights, just install them and see for yourself. Install is fairly simple. If you’re on the fence and wondering if you should go that route, then meet up with someone that has them and see if you like them. If you're not a fan of customer service from Morimoto, order them from Meraki Autoworks. They're customer service is top notch.

Pretty sure he meant LED assemblies as he paid $1800 for them.

A headlight upgrade on my 1990 911 Targa was very much needed. I won't be doing this with my 2007 997 Turbo. Stock is good enough. Not enough juice for the squeeze

man, I’m sorry to hear of some folks having issues. I swapped out the OE Xenon’s for the LED assemblies last year and have been pleased. The setup initially with the switch box was painful but once that was addressed it’s been mostly flawless. I feel like it was worth the swap.

I don’t have experience with Morimotos but I recommend trying to first replace the bulbs. I swapped my dim 2010 997.2 HID
bulbs for Osram Night Breakers and it made a huge difference. Old bubs dim over time and it’s worth $150 to give it a shot.
