Hi Guys, So my battery went dead in my car with the key in the ignition. was able to release the key before this with no problems. Now i have changed the battery to a new one however when i insert the key into the ignition and turn the ignition on, when i turn it off i am unable to take the key out the ignition.
I am able to release the key with the manual release through the hole on the ignition switch but its very annoying especially at night to try and release the key every single time after i drive.
It seems there is an issue with the solenoid as i can insert the key and hear it click and then pull it back out but the minute i turn the ignition or the engine on i then need to use the manual release to get the key back out.
Is there a way i can fix this by removing the switch and repairing something or do i just need to spend £350 for a new one. (Based in the UK)
Any help would be majorly appreciated, thanks.

Try spraying dry lube on the key before inserting

I had no idea there was a solenoid... I did find this thread which may be helpful: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...placement.html

I think i am correct in saying so. Its what makes the click noise when you insert the key into the ignition switch. But just trying to see if there is a fix people know about before i go and spend the money and replace it. Thats what the guy has done in the link that you have sent.

Assuming you have both keys supplied with the car, do both exhibit this behavior? Are the key batteries fresh? Is the key number displayed in the center IP when inserted?
I only used Key 2 for the first 10 years. When I tried Key 1, it would not function until I opened the case, measured the battery voltage (it was OK) and reinstalled the same battery. It has worked fine to this day. I now alternate keys each time I drive.
Not sure if any of this addresses your problem; just more loose ends to consider.

Both the keys exhibit the same behaviour annoyingly. The key was working fine then the battery died and when i connected the new one it would no longer work. Not sure if when the battery died it fried something inside of the ignition switch. Batteries on both the keys seem to be fine so not sure what else it could be. I will try doing what you did though in regards to opening the case.
Thanks

I had similar issue and replacing the ignition switch was the solution.

I would reset the computer modules. Do you have access to a Durametric? Very easy to do with this tool.
If no tool, try disconnecting your battery again overnight... without the key in. Hey its cheap. Put a towel over your latch just in case.
Peace

Agree with Bruce on doing another battery disconnect and reconnect. While disconnected, touch the 2cbattery cables together to drain any residual current from the modules.
