Default Possible Coolant Leak - Where to Look? 997.2

2009 C2S 197K miles

Odd, my coolant level appears to have dropped a bit. It is below MIN, now it always would be just under that line but I noticed it is now a bit lower than normal. So where to look?

It is not the caps... I checked for whitish crusty stuff and nothing. I looked under the engine where that black plastic pipe connects... nothing... followed all the pipes underneath the engine... nothing. What gets me is I don't smell anything. Even back when my blue cap was leaking ever-so slightly, I could smell it in the garage.

My tank is new as of 15 months ago.

Ideas? I don't mind pulling a wheel or whatever.

Peace

I've seen videos on the tube that showed leaks with the coolant piping around the front end to/from the radiators. Just a thought.

If you're willing to sacrifice a coolant reservoir cap...adapt a Schrader valve to it and then pump up the coolant system to 15psi. Check for leaks. Check for leakdown (pressure loss).

This is a 997.1 but I swear I saw the same issue on a .2 somewhere.

Great vid... thanx, tomorrow I will jack up the front and check those pipes. Excellent.

Dang, those UK cars really rot. The problems they have I have never seen here. He made a comment about how the mufflers were looking good as they were not split. Split ? Cripes, I never heard of a split can. Sheesh.

Peace

That's because every video or TV show from the UK I've seen it's raining. All the time. Its like Portland but with better teeth.

I pulled the front wheels... nope, no leaks I can see... again, I don't smell anything.

I added some 50/50 mix I had from when I flushed the system... so now I have it exactly at the MIN line... I know what will happen, over the summer, it will drop about 1/2 inch, which is maybe 1/2 quart. If its leaking, I should be able to smell it. Odd

Peace

Did your (our) car(s) have the same coolant crossover pipes as the .1 in the video?

Is your oil level going up or staying the same when you expect it to be dropping? Any creamy white oil residue in oil fill tube? Is one or more spark plugs especially clean when compared to others?

Oil drops steadily and predictable. I change it every 5K... it always looks fine. Regarding the cross over... I don't know... I can see three pipes on each side... two coming from/to the radiators and on each side, there is a junction where the pipes go rearward. Nope, tight.. no residue... clean.

Peace

Bruce,
Have you tried putting your Uview refill device on to see if it holds vacuum? Or get a pressure tester from the auto parts store to see if it holds pressure.

Not yet. I am heading out tomorrow for a 6 hour drive... then 6 back later in the week. I've carefully marked the current cold level (exactly at Min) and will examine when I return, cold of course. If I don't see a change, I probably won't do anything. If there is a change, yes I will stick on my coolant fill cap and give it a test. I am skeptical it will be different after my trip. The leak, if there is one, takes a long long time to move the line so I remember. I've noticed this for a few years now... if it is a leak, it is super small.

UPDATE:

Just back from a 900 mile trip in 85F weather, and ... wait for it .... cold coolant level was just a tad, maybe 1mm ABOVE what it was when I took off for this trip. WTF?

I think I am dealing with the classic "measurement problem" where my observation is collapsing the wave function and I am within the probability curve of that wave.

Peace

I saw that video a few weeks ago and thought it a good idea to pull off the front underbody cover. Pulling it off revealed the same cross pipes as in the video. I have an ‘11 997.2S for comparison. The cross pipes are rigid aluminum, but there are a series of connections behind the underbody cover that are worthy of inspection. Several are the rubber hose with the pressed on metal flange that use an o-ring and spring clip to connect with the aluminum pipe. The connections at #’s 3 & 28 are worthy of inspection. Inspect both the left and right sides.

On the left side of the engine there is a plastic 90 degree elbow at the water pump area (pump to thermostat). It is common for a slow leak to develop there, the pipe would have white/pink residue on it. It may only leak when up to temp and while driving.
