Default HVAC coding question

My 997.2 is currently at my indie shop for a new HVAC control module install. The OEM just quit and only a few of the buttons remained working.

The control module is in, but they're having trouble "coding/handover".

Does anyone know what this means?

I got my car back and all is well. My aftermarket headunit needed to be bypassed with appropriate coding from a PIWISS 3. The protocol/code came from PCNA. It seems a lot of Porsche owners are upgrading their audio and the PCM needs to be taken into consideration when the HVAC module is replaced.
