993 or 997.1

Generally speaking, 997's do not require compression Leak Down because as I understand it, the tollerences are so tight in these engines they won't run properly/inconsistent idle of there is a compression issue and most 997 buyers don;t get Compression Leak Down tests. Leakdowns were for the Aircooled engines but even the 993 has tight tollerences and I never heard of it for those models but might be happening now.
356-1988 911's yes on Leakdown.
#2. I recommend Bore Scope Inspection through Spark Plug Holes on higher mileage cars (70K miles - 140K) which has served me well/saved my *** on 4 997 purchases.
Cost of Spark Plug Hole Inspection is approx $350 + PPI cost
Some feel you should only Bore Scope Inspect from below removing Oil Sump Plate.
Bore Scope Inspection through Oil Sump is better for determining early signs of scoring since scoring starts at bottom of cylinder however, most sellers will not allow this invasive inspection. (*2)
Oil Sump Inspection can cost up to $1400 on it's own providing seller allows it & there are no problems with removal of underside parts/cost of new oil/filter/etc.
(*2) - New improved/less confrontational groovzilla version of Spark Plug vs. Oil Sump Bore Scope Inspection .

Seems high to me. My 911's PPI was $600 in 2020.

@guppychao This is a question I've wrestled with myself, having dipped my toe into the 964 and 993 waters. At the moment my garage space limits my options so, like you, it seems to be an either/or proposition instead of a both/and. For me, as much as the aircooled experience is a special one, my 997 is simply a better car in every way. It's safer, more comfortable, easier to maintain (I can do practically everything myself), more reliable, faster, more capable, more advanced and more modern without losing that essential 911-ness.
But all the objective criteria aside these cars are still emotional and the driving experience is what motivates us. I'll echo what others have suggested, try to get some seat time in a 993. When you know what feels right to you, that's when you'll have your answer.
Also, I think anything in four-figures for a PPI is pretty steep, even with a bore scope.

If money was not an issue I would go for a 993 C4S or C2S or 964 in manual transmission. Love the body shape of the 993 and 964...every angle looks so good and perfect!!!
